American Lawn Mower 1815-18 August 27, 2005 D. G. Christian 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
Easy to assemble. Easier to use. The easiest pushing, sharpest lawn mower I have used in the past 15 years. My experience, however, is limited to 4 sessions with the mower. It appears to be solid and well built.
Leave the gas, oil, repairs, and noise behind November 3, 2006 R. Liddell (Seattle, WA USA) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I've only owned this mower for one summer now, and I have a very small backyard in in the PNW, but I'm very impressed with this little mower. I grew up in Denver mowing huge double-lot yards with gas mulching mowers, but even if I had a huge yard I would give this mower a try. It took me about 15 minutes to assemble it -- super easy. It only takes me a couple of minutes to mow my little 300 square foot yard. I don't waste time filling it up with gasoline or using a screwdriver to pry out the crusty grass from around the blade housing, like with most gasoline-powered mulching mowers. Like some other reviewers have noted, if the grass is long it can take a few passes (in opposite directions) to get the grass cut -- long grass can get matted down by the mower. The only other downside to this mower is that you'll need to do more edging at fences and other obstacle because the blades don't cut as close to the wheels as with many gasoline-powered mowers. For me, that's a small price to pay in exchange for the simplicity, pollution-free, and noise-free advantages of this mower.

The nicest aspects of this mower are that it is VERY SAFE even for the kids to use (YES! and they will even ask to have a turn at mowing), it Never requires gas and You can easily talk on the phone as you push it.
Great Buy! April 16, 2004 Emilie Hare (Austin, TX USA) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I live on a small lot in Austin, Texas. The grass is kind of tough and scrubby here, but that's actually ideal for this type of mower. I love this mower because it's quiet and doesn't stink or make me go to the gas station, plus it's a great work out! It's low maintenance and gives you acceptable performance. If you want a lovely manicured lawn, this is not the mower for you. This mower does a good job of keeping your grass at an acceptable level, but doesn't do a good job of cutting most of the weeds I come across. Weeds that are really flexible or super long do not get cut by the blades. (Relax, it's just a lawn!) Something I didn't like is the fact that once the mower was assembled, the handle is crooked. It's not that big of a deal, but it looks a little drunken because it's not even. The Texas grass is hard on the blades, too. I've mowed the grass 5 times and it's already time to sharpen the blades. I advise you buy the blade sharpening kit at the same time as the mower to save yourself the hassle. I would definitely buy one of these again. I'm happy with the product overall and it fits my needs.
Mows your Lawn May 5, 2004 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I recently purchased another copy of this via Amazon after my prior one ended up in someone else's garage; used for a year or so. If you buy it, here's what you'll find: Easy assembly in maybe 15 minutes with an 11mm wrench (or adjustable, whatever). Use water to slide on the foam handle. Hardware was complete (purchased 4/04) with 2 extra pieces. All metal is apparently finished well against corrosion. Although the handle appears flimsy, it is more than adequate to do the job and there is no flex under use. The wheels have good traction and do not slip on the grass when they're pushed along, at least when the grass is dry which is the only time that I mow. Mine came set up perfectly to work just as soon as I put it together; blades were sharp and adjusted, and height, the only other possible adjustment, takes about 1 minute to set. This reel mower is actually easier to use in my opinion than an unpowered gas one as it is lighter; and easier to maneuver than a powered gas mower, though it does have the odd behavior of "flipping over" when you pull it back towards youself to go over a tight area. This can be annoying but maybe it's required by the design, I don't know. It is easy enough to use that I have actually used one on larger plots of land and with less fatigue than a heavy gas job - you just turn on the CD player, and walk along. And of course there are all the other many advantages over the stinky, noisy gas couterparts which others have already mentioned, changing clothes and showering fumes and grass bits off yourself aterwards, etc. In fact I don't think of mowing with this as a chore, as I used to do with the power mower, though your mileage may vary on that one. The only big comparative drawback is that it will not cut long grass or sticks, and I have used a borrowed mower and rake for the first cut. But once the lawn is "ready," it is perfectly easy after that. I reel-mow once every 2 weeks in Spring up here in the fertile Pacific NW, and find that this is enough to keep the lawn "reel-ready" (length kept on the high setting). Grass clippings are longer and not pulverized compared to powered ones, but I don't find them too ugly to leave for mulch. In fact I'd agree that a reel-cut lawn looks a little better than a power chopped one, even with the leavings. So in sum: this mower is easier and a lot more pleasant to use than a gas mower as long as you pre-cut to length, and this brand is of good, durable quality and does the job well.
