love it June 20, 2008 T. Waggoner (WA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I love this product! My lawn looks so much better and I don't have to deal with the problems of electric cords, charging batteries, or noisy (and currently expensive to operate) gas mowers. This cuts well, is quiet, and is easy to push. My neighbors tried my mower and promptly ordered one for themselves! I suspect that the complainers here would complain about anything.
Good for a reel mower BUT ... August 11, 2008 Mrs. R (Illinois USA) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This Gilmour Reel Mower would be ideal for someone with a small lawn that is even and non-sloping. I gave it 4 stars because I think that for a reel mower it's a very good one. But any reel mower is probably not the best option for a large or sloping yard. (1) TRIMMING: Anything that's taller than about 5" does not get cut so you have to trim what's left standing after you mow. I have the level set to `5' (`6' is the maximum) which helps get some of the higher stuff but it still leaves a lot. (2) TIME: We have a large yard. It takes me about 6 to 8 hours to mow the whole yard plus an extra 4 or more hours to trim the tall stuff that's left sticking up, so 10 to 12 hours. If we had a gas mower, it would probably take about 3 to 5 hours because there would be very little trimming or going over the same spot several times with the mower to get the taller grass. (3) STALLING: The mower does not work well if you have a lot of uneven spots on the lawn because it needs the friction of the lawn against the wheels to move the blades. So, if you hit a bump or a dip and the wheels can't grip then you won't be cutting anything. If you hit a stick or a thick weed stem then the blades will stop and you'll have to pull it out. (4) EFFORT: Mowing with a reel mower takes a lot of effort. It's pretty hot where I live. It cooled off to 82 degrees yesterday and I spent 50 minutes mowing with the Gilmour. When I finally quit, my face was red, I had sweat stinging my eyes and I felt like I ran a half-marathon. My arms are bulking up from mowing and I'm getting some good aerobic exercise, though.
Gilmour 20-Inch Reel Mower With Grass Catcher May 17, 2008 D. R. Holt (Olympia, WA USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I got the mower because I need the exercise and its eco friendly. It does a nice job of mowing and its not hard to push. I'm suprised that more people don't use them. The only disadvantage I can see is that it doesn't cut tall grass like a gas mower would. On the plus side it doesn't throw rocks and if you run into a stick and the blades get stuck all you have to do is push the blades backwards and presto it becomes unstuck. I am very happy I got it.
A Satisfactory Substitute May 27, 2008 Linda (Dallas) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
When both my electric B&D mower AND my trusty riding mower gave out at the same time, I decided to get a reel type as a substitute for when the others are out of commission. Our yard is on the small side, and is mostly St. Augustine grass, other than a few stubborn patches of Bermuda. Only a few twigs from a tree in the front yard would interfere with the operation of a reel mower. I chose the Gilmour over the other popular brands, based on customer reviews and the fact that, unlike the other brands, this one claimed to have self-sharpening blades. (I did not buy a blade sharpening kit.) I was surprised at the price of reel mowers, since most of them seem to be as or more expensive than a few of the gasoline mowers that I had priced. It arrived quickly, and was easy to put together, in spite of the poor instructions. Based on previous customer reviews, I didn't fool with the grass catcher attachment - the manufacturer could leave that off and save the customer a couple $. The Gilmour was no harder to push than the electric mower that I had been using (that died while still under warranty), and gave almost as good a cut as the electric one, other than for a few weedy sprigs that stood taller than the grass, and which weren't fazed by the Gilmore. The 3rd time I used it, one of the wheels on the height adjustment component came off. I managed to get it back on, but it was not easy, due to the location of the screw. Since I've never used another brand of reel mower, I have nothing to compare it to, but I'm satisfied with its cut. It's not the best in the world, but it costs nothing to operate, and hopefully, it won't need costly repairs, so will continue to be an adequate substitute when the others are not functioning. If I had to do it all over again, I'd still choose this one, even though I thought that, at $130, it was overpriced.
Gilmour 20" Reel Mower w/ Grass Catcher May 28, 2008 J. Roecker (NJ) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Love this! It's self sharpening but because of this a bit loud. Easier than hand sharpening so I can take it. The grass catcher is perfect for composting. It doesn't work 100% so it leaves some grass on your lawn as fertilizer which is perfect! The rest goes in the composter for next year's garden. Biodynamic fun!
