5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Mower!   April 17, 2008

I LOVE this mower. It is the first environmentally friendly mower I've had that does everything it promises. It is quiet, has plenty of power without the cord, is light, effortless to start, cut my whole yard on one charging and has made mowing a breeze instead of something I dread. It even blasted right through the tall, heavy grass of the first mowing of the year...just make sure that the grass is completely dry before mowing. I'd buy one again in a second...thanks, Remington!!

5 out of 5 stars Great design - near perfect implimentation   May 9, 2008

First off, "The Real McCoy" and a couple of the other reviewers clearly had received lemons or 'damaged in transit' products or had 'other' limiting issues...

After researching all available electrical and cordless mowers available, two items drew me irresistibly to this product over all others:

1. The movie clip on the web site showing the use of the power boost mode wacking down tall grass and shrubs.

2. The review from a fellow northwesterner that has already used the product with the wet grass we cannot get away from until August (if we are lucky).

Those two items would be enough to give it a try. But on top of that, the product has the excellect design features of being able to run not only cordless, but electric if the battery is dead, or the boost mode using both battery and cord if the grass is long or wet or there are leave, ect.

I have not had leaves or an overgrown lawn nor was it freshly rained on as to really test the boost mode. But it was noticably more powerful, chopping up the pinecones that were on the lawn. And contrary to "The Real McCoy", I had NO problem cutting 2-3 inches of normally wet Northwest grass without any problem!!! ON BATTERY!!!

I do not know what you guys are doing wrong with the clippings basket, mine rides high with NO signs of being anywhere close to dragging. I do agree that there is a minor design flaw as other reviewers have noted, "...stop every 5 minutes, remove the clippings basket and push the grass further back into the basket". But if thats the only thing that I have found so far, I'll be a happy camper.

And if you want to make it a little lighter (its 60lb fully loaded), take the battery out and it less than 40lb!

If you want to be green and save your back and ears, you cann't go wrong with this product in my view. I couldn't find a better designed product out there!

2 out of 5 stars More Ground Fault Trips - Fixed?   April 26, 2008

I haven't used it yet except to turn it on in 120V mode (since I read one of the other reviews that complained of GFCI trips) and it tripped my GFCI outlet too.

The mulching plug was missing (no water bottle either; though I wasn't really expecting that).

I have an email into the manufacturer for both issues.

Update: I purchased a portable GFCI plug after reading online that older/aging GFCI outlets tend to have more nuisance trips than new outlets. I then plugged the portable GFCI plug into the end of my extension cord (which I had plugged into a non-GFCI outlet in my house) and proceeded to mow with no GFCI trips in 120V mode or 120V boost mode. After having success with the portable GFCI I went to Home Depot and purchased a new GFCI outlet and installed it where the old outlet was and was able to run the lawnmower without tripping the outlet.

Still haven't heard anything back about the missing parts.

Definitely need to slow down in tall or damp grass to not bog down the mower. I don't know if it would have been any different if I had actually had a mulching plug although I guess it probably just saves you from having to scoop out the filled up grass discharge chute.

4 out of 5 stars Quality Control Issues & Follow-Up   May 11, 2008

I had two significant quality control issues with the mower I received. Both issues should have been addressed at the factory during assembly:

1. I noticed that one of the mower's two electrical battery contacts was loose. This should have been secured by a screw during the assembly process, but the screw was not fully tightened. The design of the contact relies on the screw to provide pressure and electrical contact with a ring terminal on the end of an electrical lead. Instead, the contact on my unit was loose and flopping about. The only way to access the screw to tighten this terminal was to remove the main cover of the mower. The problem was easily resolved once the cover was off, but the manufacturer does not intend for the end user to access internal parts.

2. My mower was extremely loud due to an internal "ding" in the sheet metal fan / blower cover at the top of the electric motor (internal parts not intended for service by the end user). You shouldn't hear any significant noise when you rotate the blade by hand (unpowered with the battery and start key removed). Instead I heard an intermittent noise that suggested interference of a moving part. It sounded something like a circular saw when running under power. The noise seemed to be coming from the top of the mower. Upon opening and disassembling the unit, I found that the light sheet metal fan / blower cover had a "ding" in the top that interfered with the blower wheel as it rotated. The cover is crimped in place. I removed the cover (bent the sheetmetal to effectively remove the crimp) and tapped out the ding with a hammer on my workbench vise. When reinstalled, the unit now runs "whisper quiet." Given the design of the unit, a ding of this nature could not have occurred after assembly. This should have been caught during the quality control process (I assume they should at least have started it up before boxing it).

I noticed that the internal wires were not "dressed" (routed) in areas that appear to have intended for this purpose (relief within support ribs). One wire in the vicinity of the power selection dial had been trapped under a molded plastic screw boss, and the insulation, although intact, was rather severely deformed -- probably not a major issue. On a minor note, I heard some rattling from within the battery assembly that turned out to be broken plastic ribs in the plastic housing cover (likely broken during the shipping process). I don't feel that the broken ribs should affect the functionality of the mower.

Overall my impression of the mower's design and construction is that while it's rather light in weight and materials (heavy reliance on plastic with metal reinforcement where necessary) it should be serviceable for the intended use my mower will see. The defects I found suggest to me a lack of attention to detail and quality control.

FOLLOW-UP - 27 May 2008:
I have found that the unit generates radio interference when it's plugged in and charging. This continues even when the battery is fully charged for as long as the cord remains plugged in. I'm using an outlet in the garage to supply AC power. My radio alarm clock is located on the second floor at the opposite portion of the house, so it's not likely that the radio and mower are on the same electrical circuit. When charging, there is a definite decline in the quality of the radio output (audible background static). I'm not experiencing any TV signal interference (cable TV signal), but I can't say whether an over-the-air TV signal might be affected.

5 out of 5 stars Great for what it is   May 10, 2008

A lot of people are giving this mower low reviews. And I'm sure if you let your grass grow really long and mow after it rains, it's not going to perform in it's cordless fashion. But I have a nice small yard, I wait for a nice day, and it works great. I can go at my normal pace, it's light and easy to handle, and it's super quiet. I don't feel like I'm waking up the neighborhood if I want to get an early start. Yeah, the manual could be better, but the thing is so simple to put together and use, I'd have a hard time expanding on it. I'd definitely buy another.
