Eat out(side) every night in the summer August 5, 2007 Gavin R. Jewell (Seattle, WA, USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Combined with Weber's chimney starterWeber 87886 Chimney Starter this grill is such a cinch to start/use/clean that we've hardly had our kitchen stove on all summer. Other reviewers have disparaged the ash collector on the Gold model, but I'm very glad to have ignored them. My Weber sits high-up on our wooden deck, and the enclosed ash collector safely and tidily collects everything with no spills so far. I have to empty it perhaps once every 5 meals or so, but it detaches easily and empties cleanly with just a quick tap or two over the compost bin. I agree that the "one touch" cleaning feature isn't perfect, but it does push most of the ash through the vents into the collector after a few touches. Most importantly, it does it without having to get your hands dirty or throwing loads of ash into the air. We spent a lot of time dithering over Gold vs. Silver and are really pleased to have spent the extra money on the Gold model. One of the cool features for those more environmentally concerned, is that by closing off all the vents (after you've finished cooking), you can easily extinguish the remaining coals and re-use them next time. unless I'm cooking a lot in one go, I'm easily able to get 2 meals from each batch of coals KINGSFORD SURE FIRE 18LB - 71725 - KINGSFORD COMPANY. The chimney starter facilitates this, as well as eliminating the need for horrid hydrocarbon-based lighter fluid. We're convinced that this has improved the flavour of our food as well (which has been superb, if we do say so ourselves). Although this model is quite large, the position of its handles, center of gravity, and smooth large wheels make moving it around for use/storage very easy. And it's practically a design classic anyway (lots of imitations can be found), and its squat kettle shape looks good on display. There are some downsides which, if I didn't love this so much would make me rate this with 4 stars: Home assembly was a little trickier than I expected - attaching the legs and ash collector attachment required a little patience and attaching the wheels involved a fiddly end cap which needed a small hammer and some dexterity. The lid hook is hidden and small and although I've got the hang of it now, others in my family don't find it that easy. It pretty much only allows you to hang the lid on the side of the main body rather than anywhere else on the deck. The lid handle can also get quite hot (although not always) so unless you've got asbestos fingers like I have, you may want to ensure you've got some good oven gloves/mitts. But these are very minor points considering the satisfaction we've had using the Weber Gold.

I like the grill so far--just set it up. Mine didn't come with instructions, so here's the link to the online version: http://www.weber.com/manuals/pdf_files/One-Touch_Gold_30792_01_10_2001.pdf For other Weber setup manuals, see: http://www.weber.com/bbq/pub/support/productManuals.aspx
The classic grill, improved February 11, 2008 R. Evans (Sunny Florida) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The classic Weber grill, improved. Weber's been making this grill in one version or another forever. There's a good reason - it's nearly perfect. Unlike square grills, the shape lends itself to even heat distribution for even cooking. Temperature control is easy with the top and bottom adjustable vents. Emptying the ashes is painless thanks to the ash catcher. Just move the bottom vent handle back and forth a couple of times to dump the ashes through the vent holes, then rotate the ash catcher handle a little to remove. Disposal is quick and mess-free. It's the best cooking charcoal grill out there, but you can add accessories like the rotisserie, top slide aside, tool holder, work table, condiment tray, indirect cooking baskets, etc... you get the idea.
3RD WEBER March 18, 2008 Michael Bingle (Basking Ridge, NJ USA) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought my first Weber in the early 80s. I had that one for 15 years. When I moved in 1995 I bought the same one 21" kettle grill. I love the thing. In the past few years I've become know as the "KING" of the BBQ where I live. I cook for a lot more people than I used to, so I now own another 21" kettle grill. I use both at the same time. Some people think I'm nuts until they taste the food. I cooked a few times on a gas grill, but that for lazy people that don't have any taste buds. This grill is the best of the best.
Superior taste to propane!! September 1, 2008 Bullethead1964 (Central Florida) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The first time I saw a true Weber charcoal grill was at my future father in law's house. I asked him about it and he told me Weber was from Palantine, Illinois. We were grilling in the tiny town of Lebanon, Illinois. We told me Weber was the best, and this was 1989. I guess I'm a little slow, so it took me until 2007 to purchase my Weber One Touch Gold (OTG) after numerous horrible gas grill experiences, so I took the plunge and bought the Weber during the summer of 2007. Here is it, Labor Day 2008 and I have just cooked some perfect rib-eye's. Wow, the flavor is unreal! One of my other favorite items to cook on the Weber OTG is whole chicken, smoked and cooked on indirect heat. To accomplish this, pick up the Weber charcoal trays, and place one on each side of the grill (on the bottom gate). Between them in the middle of the grill, also on the bottom grate, I place my drip pan, and my box of wet smoking chips (apple). Place the seasoned bird over the drip pan, on thetop grate (treated with vegie oil) on cover with the lid. A 3 lb bird cooks in @ 60-75 mins, a 4-5 lb bird, @ 1 hr 45 mins, and for 6 lb bird I let it cook for @ 2 hrs. The unique kettle design encourages perfect, even heat. Let the bird sit for 15 mins after removing from the grill and then enjoy! As for the grill it's self: The ash pan is a huge plus, allowing easy ash removal. The major bane of charcoal grills has been mitigated! Two small "cons": The plastic handles do get a bit warm, so I use an oven glove. When moving the grill I did have a leg fall off once. ---It took me a while to get used to cooking with charcoal. For me there were a few keys to success: 1. Allow your charcoal to fully burn out and turn white before adding your food. This eliminates the dreaded flame ups. (you can keep a spray bottle of water near by to sqaush any flame outs) 2. Don't fill he entire grill with charcaol. Keep one side or the perimeter clear of charcoal so you have some space to place food out of direct heat. 3. Stay with your food! Don't wander around when you food is on the grill. Stay close by, and watch what is happening. I actally like to use a grill fork with a built in thermometer, so I don't over cook the food. 4. After you take the food off the grill, let it sit for 5-10 minutes to allow the juices to flow back into the food. For me, charcoal provides superior flavor and for us, using a Weber is the only way to grill, BBQ and cook outside.
