My father-in-law bought this for my husband. Best gift he ever got that I used!! Right now (2/8/07) Central New York is getting so much snow that I pulled it out. There was well over 2 feet of heavy snow on our roof. Although I am only 5'2" it was easy to use. I might even buy another to have a his and hers. Might be pulling it out AGAIN in a few hours.
Works pretty darn good.... January 7, 2008 BobC98 (Clayton, CA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I just reviewed what I wrote and see the Amazon still uses my old town of Clayton, CA. I actually live in Northern Michigan now. I've only used the rake once so far, but it worked really well. I've lived in a warm climate for the last 40 years, so this was all kind of new to me (ice dams and such). The snow has been bountiful in Northern Michigan this year and we had over a foot on the roof that had been there at least a month. Quite a bit had melted and dammed up at the bottom, so I figured it was time to do something about it and began researching. There were some really good reviews on Amazon so I thought I'd give it a try. This was my first roof rake ever, so I can't compare it to anything, but it seemed to work great for the most part. I have a large roof area and it took quite awhile to get around the house because of all the snow up there, mainly because I had to shovel off the porch where I had started first. The rake sliced through the deep heavy snow pretty well and it tumbled down in big chunks. I couldn't get it to work as well in the valleys. Maybe it was because of the depth or just merely the angle, but the valleys took a lot of time and effort. As I move around the house, there were areas where I had to put on all four extensions. It was pretty heavy and hard to maneuver with all that weight, so if you don't need them, don't use them all. As I was moving around the house it must have looked like I was a flag bearer for the country of Avalanche that has this really bizarre long orange flag. After I had finished, I noticed that there were some small tears in the "flag" up where it meets the roof. Supposedly I just need to cut that part off and reattach it to the roller, but I haven't tried that yet. I can only imagine how tough the job would have been with an ordinary roof rake. Next time I won't wait so long to tackle the job, so it should be easier. I'm being cautious with my rating due to the slight tear in the "flag", the cost and my relative inexperience with the whole snow removal thing, but in general I think it is a good design and did the job well.

I live in the snowbelt of Northern Michigan where we average over 180" of snow each winter. My first Avalanche was purchased over 15 years ago when the handles were wood (and heavy). A couple years ago I replaced it with the newer model (purchased here at Amazon). A great product made even better by the lighter weight handle. If you've torn the plastic slide, bring it indoors, let it dry out, and when it's warmed up, get out the duct tape and repair any tears or holes. A good marine sail repair tape also works. My slide has a patchwork of duct tape, but the snow flies easily over the tape. Spraying a bit of oil on the ends makes it easier to connect the rods when the temps are in the teens or lower.
Best winter tool we've ever bought January 23, 2008 Ann Adrian (Richmond, IL USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought the Avalanche 300 based entirely on the posted reviews. My husband was skeptical but after a learning curve of about 5 minutes, he effortlessly can clear our roof of snow and prevent the build-up of ice dams. This product is amazing. It has cut our roof snow removal time down to a fraction of the time we formerly spent. It is well-made and light-weight. This is the best value ever for the purchase price.
