5 out of 5 stars Best Quality Water Bottle, Safe and BPA Free   May 30, 2008

*****
This is an upscale designer water bottle, top of the line in every way. The designs of Sigg's water bottles are gorgeous--even the plain, solid color bottles are beautiful--but the ones with designs are even better, in my opinion. I like to choose a pattern that reflects me. This one is unusual and beautiful in its own way.

I switched from regular plastic water bottles because of health concerns, even though I thought a permanent bottle like this would take more work to maintain. These do necessitate regular cleaning (I clean mine every day), but having something so beautiful to drink from makes the cleaning less of a chore. Sort of like my rings, glasses, and watch, I now consider my Sigg personal water bottle a vital accessory, reminding me to drink more water, making a statement about my values, and expressing myself with a special design.

Sigg of Switzerland water bottles are very high quality, made of light aluminum on the outside, slightly insulated, and covered with a special powder coat on the inside that prevents any leaching whatsoever, unlike plastic and polycarbonate water bottles. They are light, durable, and perfect for any activity. Well water tastes spectacular in these bottles, just like from the tap. They do dent if dropped on a hard surface at a particular angle, but Sigg fans (including me) view this as a type of "seasoning", so that your bottle acquires character. The dents are on the outside layer of the bottle, not the inside layer and so don't interfere with any functionality.

Sigg bottles come with several different types of tops. This particular bottle has a sports top. I'm not the biggest fan of the sports top, preferring a screw top, but this works conveniently when you don't want to take the time to unscrew the top for a drink. It is leak proof.

Sigg makes their personal water bottle in many sizes. I use the .6L size as my basic every day size, and keep it in my briefcase. It is a bit too large for my purse, although if you carry a tote it is an ideal size. It is also good for sports activities that require less water, like shorter walks. For my car and other uses I use the larger 1L size.

This bottle may seem expensive, but it is so durable that you can plan on it lasting many years. I consider Sigg bottles both an accessory and an investment in my health, so they are well worth it value-wise for me.

Note that Sigg water bottles should not be used to contain boiling water, as this will damage the outer coating. They also cannot be left in the freezer, as it may crack. They can be used for carbonated beverages, if you leave about a half inch of room at the top.

Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Buy the bottle, ditch the top   May 31, 2008

Water bottles are a great way to reduce our waste stream while drinking the best beverage around: cool, clear water. Unfortunately, the Nalgene or other polycarbonate plastic ones may leach endocrine disrupters (just what my metabolism needs). Other types of plastic get unwanted tastes, and I figure we just don't know that they're also bad for us. Stainless steel bottles give you a nice metallic taste--reminds me of Girl Scout camp canteens, but.... Aluminum is nice and light, but do I want aluminum leaching into my water? I do have a nice Voss mineral water bottle that I wash out and reuse at home, but it is heavy and, of course, breakable.

Enter the Swiss Sigg bottle. It has some mystery coating that purports to be safe--and given the reputation of the Swiss, I guess I'm inclined to take their word for it. It sure doesn't impart any taste to the water. It does have to be washed by hand--but using the somewhat pricey Sigg brand tablets takes 30 minutes of soaking and requires maybe one rinse with water instead of the gallons it seems to take to get even a drop of dishwashing liquid rinsed away.

The sport top sucks--literally, you feel like you have to suck the water out--a thin stream comes out when you press it to your lips, and all your lip balm comes off on the top. The cover, which is handily attached for those of you who have trouble keeping track of such things, smacks you in the nose or chin while you drink unless you carefully hold it away with your fingers. I prefer the regular top, with the optional leash attachment if you are prone to losing things. I bought mine separately--which will be convenient if I do lose it, but you can also just buy a bottle with the regular top.

These bottles are great for short trips and lunch boxes. I personally don't like the sport cap but my kids like it.

I love the Sigg water bottles. They are very durable, and of course have fun and beautiful designs. The only thing I don't like is that you have to have a bottle brush to clean them (if you put in a drink other than water).

Glad to find a bpa-free water bottle. Looks nice. Took awhile to get use to sport top. Dents easily. Need to clean between uses, must dry completely before next use according to the instructions.
