1 out of 5 stars If you are able to lift 50-100 lbs, don't purchase!   May 21, 2007

I ordered three of the Topsy Turvy Upside-down Tomato Planters last spring for the summer of 2006, thinking it would be great for saving space in my small garden area. I ordered it and had my husband install hooks on our south-facing back patio. When they arrived, I inserted the plants just as described and filled them with the best possible bagged soil I could find. Not only did they not grow any better than the traditional ground method, but it was too heavy for me to lift up to the hooks. My husband (operates heavy equipment for a living and very strong) even had difficulty doing the lifting once they were filled with soil, both when they were installed and then again when they were taken down in October, with our first frost. If you are not strong enough to lift 50-100 lbs, don't purchase. Considering the trouble I had with this product, I would not purchase this item again, and would recommend that if you have any disabilities as I have or are elderly, try the traditional method. I'm thinking about having my husband build me some small raised beds about 2 feet off the ground!

3 out of 5 stars Topsy Turvy Tomato Planter Review   March 30, 2007

I have four of these planters and found the mouth of the opening for planting my tomatoes was too small. Either you have to plant very small tomatoes with small root balls or you end of damaging the larger ones.

The whole idea of the planter is great. You certainly have enough potting soil for growth; but it does take the plant a while to recover from the planting.

If you could make the opening for planting larger, it would be a five star product.

5 out of 5 stars Tomato planter   May 22, 2006

I purchased two Topsy Turvy Tomato Planters and planted two tomato plants in each. After a month they are doing very well and getting flowers. Planting upside down is not easy. I thought this would work great since I have a 2 year old who will dig in a regular pot on the ground. It's kind of tricky to get the plants in the planter. And you will make a big mess. But they take up less space on my patio and are a great topic of interest for visitors. I'm very happy with them so far.

BUY IT!! I purchased 3 of these for growing Tomato's, Green Peppers and Cucumbers and they all worked like a dream. Plants were healthy, full and produced alot of edible vegetables. I had assumed at the time i was researching this item that they dry out fast in the summer sun and that i would have to water constantly but that was not the case. I only watered once every other day. The chamber holds alot of moisture and because its plastic prevents alot of the evaporation. Only recommendation is find a sturdy spot for the hanger then leave it there until the season is over. My neighbor also bought a couple and moved them once they got to big breaking the stem of one tomato plant with was laddened with fruits. So allow at least 3-4ft of clearance under the planter for extensive growth then enjoy the resulting harvest!

3 out of 5 stars Beware of vendors and shipping charges   June 27, 2007

The product was as I expected, the packaging was great and delivery was on time BUT, the shipper (not Amazon) really overcharged me on shipping and handling charges. Carefully check S&H charges before placing an order thru Amazon's 3rd party vendors.
