be careful August 31, 2007 T. Frank (Indianapolis, Indiana United States) 20 out of 20 found this review helpful
Living on a small urgan lot, we bought a couple of these to grow more tomato plants than we are able to the traditional way. Although the upside down plants are growing right next to the plants in soil, they are only about 1/4 as large and have produced only minimal small fruit. They are probably getting too much direct sunlight. Although this is normally not a problem, the roots are getting baked. They need to be generously watered every day. If this is your only option for space to grow tomatoes, it can work OK with the right placement and TLC. If you have room to grow tomatoes the traditional way, this is not the best option.
great item, lost the surprise May 14, 2007 S. Delgado (los angeles) 17 out of 18 found this review helpful
This item is really great.very innovative, whoever came up with the idea is a genius.Tomatoes are a favorite of mine,so the upside down gimmick is cool. The product can be kind of heavy once filled,so you may need some help putting it up if you cant lift more than 40-50 lbs.The instructions are very thorough, even including some great growing tips. You can also plant many other vegetables in it!Much more cost effective and conversation starting than those non-hanging upside-down tomato planters.i recommend this for anyone who has problems with ground-dwelling insects, and even vegetable eating pests such as squirrels and mice,or just as a cool conversation starter. The loss of surprise was that this item was a mothers day gift but the item wasnt packed in a ups brown box.Amazon simply placed the address sticker on the item itself.Oh well.
Great Space Saver January 11, 2007 llfountaine 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
This is an amazing way to grow tomatoes. I bought one last year and had an abundance of tomatoes. It is easy to set up and easy to maintaine. This would be a great way to grow tomatoes on a patio or balcony.
An interesting experiment. July 15, 2007 Mother on the Brink (Suburbs, USA) 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
Got really into the garden this year and decided to try this. So far, looks good. I started with a fairly well developed seedling -- it was already four or five inches high. My husband wondered how long it would take for the leaves to re-orient to face the sun, once the plant was upside down. It took less than 12 hours. The only thing I don't like is the foam disk with a slit -- you are supposed to slip the stem through the disk. I think the disk is supposed to help absorb excess water so it doesn't drip onto the plant. It doesn't. The slit has widened, and so a fair amount of water drips onto the tomato stem, which is starting to show a little wear as a result. Some blossoms have appeared, so it is definitely planning to yield tomatoes.
Topsy Turvy Planter June 7, 2007 John Ritzema (Michigan) 12 out of 17 found this review helpful
The product came as pictured .I thought for a simple bag with wires it was overpriced. With shipping ,Miracle Grow soil and the cost of two plants I have over $60 invested in these tomatoes. They better taste wonderful. So far, however, the tomatoes are doing great.
