3 out of 5 stars Super heavy when watered   January 25, 2008

My sister is a tomato freak and she tried one of these things. She hung it on her balcony on a ceiling hook attached to a beam. Unfortunately, it didn't work for her. Perhaps it is because in Hawaii it is very very very hot. We are Zone 10 so the kinds of plants that thrive here are limited.

The one problem she had was that the container gets very heavy after it is filled and especially after you have watered it. They had to relocate it for some reason, and she could not lift it at all. It is a good thing her husband is a rather big guy who lifts weights, otherwise she wouldn't have been able to get it down. Make sure the beam or support you hang it on is very secure and strong.

Overall, she has had luck growing tomatoes, just trying to beat the birds to them. She lives on the east side of Oahu, which is a little cooler than the leeward side that I live and seems to have less pests such as aphids, other flying type of critters.

Personally I do not have luck with tomatoes as there are a lot of pests that I have that have resulted in tomatoes looking great, until a pupae crawls out of it. I think this is due to the fact that there are a lot of larger farms here, and since I don't use chemical pest control, the pests tend to take over.

With two people, the topsy turvy is easy to fill and hang. I even did two of them by myself, but that was hard. My plants are growing great and it is so easy to water them. I can't wait until they start bearing fruit.
WARNING - be sure to fill them to the top with soil or you will have birds trying to nest in them as I did. The dirt had settled, leaving enough room for a nest. I have added more soil and I'm going to be putting a hair net over the opening so the birds can't get in and I can still water them easily.

I find it hard to believe that all these reviews are from legit customers... This product was not delivere]ed anywhere near on time, and was not delivered as advertised. Don't think you are getting any "system" here, you are just getting a bag for your plants. No seeds, no dirt, nothing to hang it on (whch is no small issue since it weighs a lot with the plants inside the bag). It's an interesting idea, but don't be fooled by commericals or ads into thinking you are getting more than you are, a sack...

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT gift for a fanatic tomato gardner!   August 14, 2007

My best friend's mother has an obsession with her tomato's. There is NEVER enough space to grow them in her garden. When I gave her these for her birthday, she was thrilled to add even more tomato's OVER here tomato patch. So far this year she has had an abundant harvest!

2 out of 5 stars not large enough for tomatoes   March 15, 2008

I love growing tomatoes - I grow so many that I have absolutely no space left with all of the beds and containers around. I thought topsy was going to revolutionize everything. I bought 2 - in one I planted a determinate yellow pear tomato and in the other I planted a small-medium sized tomato, isis candy.

There was unquestionably not enough soil for these little guys to thrive. You need to leave at least a couple inches at the top for the plant to breathe - roots were overgrown and the poor thing needed to be watered 2 times a day to prevent wilting.

I really wish I could give this a better rating, but I just can't - HOWEVER - it would probably be super for other apllications like certain flowers that don't require as much water.
