Not Quite What It Claims To Be June 27, 2006 Stella Prozac (Mililani, HI USA) 22 out of 23 found this review helpful
At first, we were happy with this litter box; the concept is great and crystal litter is a huge improvement over clumping litter, but I have to say it lasts no where near as long as it claims. I have two cats, one still a kitten, and the cardboard is completely saturated and oozing on to the floor in less than a week. It's not quite as clean and simple as it sounds. It'd be okay and probably worth it to change it more often if the cartridges weren't so expensive (nearly $50 with shipping for 3!!!- that's about $20 a week for litter!!!). I have yet to find the refills at any pet stores either, so I'm forced to order on line. And for the earth-friendly product lovers out there, this one is a tad wasteful. It does work at keeping the smell down, but I can't see using this into the long term unless the price of refills go down and they become easier to find. Cleaning the litter box has become a little easier, but my stress levels over where to find and how to pay for cat litter have increased dramatically. I'm seriously on the fence about this one.
Horrible! Avoid! More odor and work than traditional litter boxes. April 2, 2007 Mystro (Pa.) 22 out of 22 found this review helpful
This is a very poor product. What you are buying is a cardboard box that holds the disposable litter tray cartridge that you must buy for the "Automated System" to work. Urine will soak through the bottom of the cardboard tray within 2 days and I have 1 cat! The company wants you to stir the litter around every day so the cat urine will soak up in the crystals. I bought this "Automated System" so I didnt have to tend to a litter box every day. I tried stiring the litter every day and urine still soaked through the bottom of the cardboard litter tray. How pathetic! Maybe the system might be a little better if the trays were made out of plastic rather than cardboard?? Avoid this system all together.
Go Go Gadget Litter Box August 4, 2006 J. Sikes (Dallas, TX) 21 out of 21 found this review helpful
I detest dealing with litter boxes. I had been using a regular old fashioned clay-based litter for a few years, but decided it was time to upgrade. With two cats, it was a constant battle to keep the box clean and non-smelly. I read reviews of many auto-boxes and found this one to have the overall best, so decided to give it a try. It was easy to put together, and there is so little 'litter' compared to the 20 lb bags I had to haul into the house on a weekly basis. After following instructions how how to get your cat used to the new box, things went fine. Cats immediately took to it and no problems whatsoever. I only have two things to note. 1) Website says "whisper quiet, like the low hum of a refrigerator running". ha! If my refrigerator sounded like that, I would unplug it and call for service immediately. It's loud. But it works well. So I'll put it with it. 2) Litter availability. It concerns me a bit that the only place I can buy the special litter cartidges is online. I went ahead and bought a 6 months supply so I don't have to worry with it, but I just hope they stay in business, otherwise the box will be useless.
Doesn't Work For All Cats September 11, 2006 Alice L. Henderson (MN) 20 out of 24 found this review helpful
This is not an impressive item. It relies on cardboard cartridges filled with Fresh Scoop litter. I've tried various things (replacing portions of litter with fresh litter daily, stirring daily, etc.) and it boils down to this...cardboard is going to absorb urine and then leak. I've seen large urine puddles on my floor in as early as 4 days after putting in a new cartidge. I do have a larger cat and I expected that I might have to change every 2 weeks rather than the 30 days that they advertise but this was too much. I was working much harder with this system than I ever did with an old fashioned scoop and pan. When you consider that a cartidge runs $16, and that the cartidge leaks, I just can't recommend this product.
No Longer Scooping September 6, 2006 R. Rogers 19 out of 19 found this review helpful
We ordered the Scoop Free Self-Cleaning Litter Box about three weeks ago for our 2 one-year-old cats. I was hoping to 1) stop scooping litter daily, and 2) leave on short vacations without hiring a pet-sitter. TRANSITION For a week I left the Scoop-Free unit next to their clay litter box, but they didn't use it. I sprinkled some clay litter over the Scoop-Free crystals during this period to help the transition. After that first week I quit scooping the old litter to encourage the transition. After a few days of dirty clay litter they still wouldn't use the Scoop-Free. So I took the clay litter away. They began using the Scoop-Free over the next 24hrs and have had no incidents. HOW IT HAS WORKED OUT The unit works great. For two weeks now I have not scooped litter. I've only touched the unit once, to replace the refill (lasts almost 2 weeks with two 12LB cats). It is always clean, and it controls odors very well (doesn't immediately hide a new odor, but gets it under control soon). I took another reviewer's advice and check the green light daily, to make sure the sensors aren't blocked. The sensors haven't been blocked yet and our cats throw litter athletically. SUMMARY This is worth the moderately increased ongoing costs. I will gladly replace the crystal refill unit every two weeks, rather than scoop litter daily. By using this litter box, along with food and water dispensers with large reservoirs, we no longer have to service the cats daily. We just enjoy their company and check in on their food/water/litter periodically. We can also leave the house for a few days without a petsitter, although I may buy a second unit as a backup (in case there is a blockage while we're out). Overall I would HIGHLY recommend this system. Just ordered more refills today.
