5 out of 5 stars The best on the Market, Well I think it is.   October 23, 2006

I have to say that I have tried almost all of the self-cleaning litter boxes out there for my Large Male 14year old cat. He has the electric water fountain for kitties and yes he does drink lot and lots of water, so you know what that means, yes, he pees a lot. Oh yea he is a larger (not fat) kitty so he eats a lot also, I aint sayin no more on that subject.

It has now been 25 AMAZING!!!!!! SCOOP/POOP/PEE CLUMP/URIN ODOR/POOP SMELL/LOTS & LOTS & LOTS OF ANOYING TRACKED SANDY LITTER .......................FREE DAYS!!!!!

This is not saying that this litter box does not have any room for improvement, but I am one happier kitty owner. I will tell anyone that hates Doody & Pee Clump Duty, or that hates the tracked litter mess and nasty clumped up (metal or plastic) rake & plastic that never fits right storage container, get this litter box.

The main gripe I have with this litter box is the cost of the replacement crystal litter cartridges, but I have been told by numerous pet store owners and workers that there will probably be a generic competitor on the market soon which will hopefully bring the price of the litter cartridges down. One can only hope! But regardless, I am keeping this auto waste center for my cay.

The other gripe, but not major problem I have seen so far, is with the cardboard for the cartridge that the litter sits in. Now my cat, with a regular clumping litter box had clumps the size of softballs. After 25 days, there is, on the bottom of the inside tray, (not the bottom one that actually touches the floor and acts as the cover when you throw the thing out) a wet spot in the area that my cat likes to urinate at, apparently this is his favorite spot to pee. On the bottom cardboard tray (the one that touches the floor and acts as the cover when you throw the cartridge out) there is just the hint of a wet spot. I think that if they increase the wax content in the cardboard or if that is what is actually coating the cardboard this will help.

I have not had to realign the rake as other people have said they had to do. I do not smell any urine or poop and there is a lot of shrunken poop under that cardboard tray cover. I have minimal tracked crystal litter on the floor around and/or under the litter box. The motor is not as quiet as I would like, but then again it doesn't bother me or wake anyone in my house up either, it is kept on a wooden floor right out side the bedroom door in a hallway.

If you are in the market for an almost maintenance free litter box for your cat, try this one. Like I said earlier, it's not 100% perfect, but it is the best damn self cleaning, almost maintenance free litter box on the market. Not every kitty or human for that matter poops and pees that same, so if you don't try it you will never know if it's right for you and your kitty/kitties. Read all the rest of the reviews for this and other products and see what everyone is saying about all of them, make an educated decision

Good Luck.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the money!!!   September 2, 2006

We have a very large male cat who has had no problems with this litter box. As an adult cat we feared he wouldn't take to an automatic litterbox but the addition of our son has taken so much of our time. No problems out of the box and it is 2 weeks later. He was interested in the noise and movement at first but has overcome the curiosity of it all. We live in an apartment with little room for the box so it is in our bedroom. The noise is very liveable for us. It only take about a minute for the cleaning to take place. The litter box is approx. 5 ft from the bed. I love this box and highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Strangely and immediately irresistable to my cats.   September 14, 2006

My cats are large - just not Maine Coon large. As far as ordinary domestic cat size, two of my five cats are large. And consequently, I go through the cartridges faster than 2/15 days. Even so, I rate this highly because my cats immediately adapted to using this system without *mistakes.* There is *no* odor or fragrance! I also discovered great relief in ridding my house and myself of the heavy bags of litter and the scattering messes I, the cats, and the hole-y bags had always made.

I would change my review to 5 of 5 stars if Amazon allowed at this time.

1 out of 5 stars Seriously disappointed...   January 25, 2008

Maybe I'm just doing something wrong, but honestly, I can't understand all the rave reviews. I have a 4-month-old kitten and I am well aware that kittens will use up litter much faster than adult cats, but we're still talking ONE CAT and I am only on day 5 of a fresh cartridge and the smell is already so intolerable that I can't be within 5 feet of the box without retching. It literally smells like someone peed in a leather boot filled with oatmeal and then microwaved it for 15 minutes. Anyone that says they manage with one cartridge for 30 days is either a liar, criminally insane or lost their sense of smell in some freak, manure-huffing accident. To contrast, I had no odor problems with the scooping litter I was originally using (I'm talking a post-poopfest, pre-scoop, completely-thrashed litter box too). Also, even with the hood and the carpet (yes - I'm the sucker that bought all the accessories), the crystals get EVERYWHERE. Then there's the price of the refills. $51.99 for three, or $99.99 for six. The audacity to charge over 15 dollars for a piece of cardboard and a pound of litter is breathtakingly criminal, and that's even if they lasted as long as the company advertises. I bought a 3-pack of litter cartridges. With these, along with the one that comes with the box, I thought I would be set for 4 months of scoop-free bliss... how sorely mistaken I was. I am already on the third cartridge and I'm already about to toss it and pop in the last one.

On to the rake system: I will admit that it's a rather ingenious design and I'm sure it's a vast improvement over other automatic liter boxes (I really wouldn't know), but I still think those boys from MIT need to go back to the drawing board. Maybe my threshold for noise is different than others, but I find this box intolerably loud and annoying. The raking itself is loud, but then at the mid point of its direction change, the rake pivots and falls to the other side making a very loud clunking noise. This, of course, is endlessly fascinating for a kitten and he will promptly investigate the noise and end up going inside the box again, setting off the infrared mechanism, ensuring that the cleaning cycle will happen 20 minutes later. I can't really fault the manufacturer for a kitten's curiosity, but I do believe it's something kitten owners should be aware of. In addition to the noise, the rake spacing is still rather wide which will invariably lead to cat poop getting behind, and thusly out of the reach of, the rake system. Sorry, but I never had to scrape crap out of my old litter box with a butter knife. Just let that imagery float around in your head for a couple minutes. I haven't had any problems with urine leaking through the bottom of the trays, but then again, I haven't had a tray in the box for more than a week. However, I did notice that the corners to the tops of every box were broken at the seams; though I don't know if this is from how they were shipped, or a manufacturing defect. Anyway, long story short: I'm switching back to the old box once I use the last refill cartridge... so that should be in about 6 days.

Edit (1/27/08): After browsing around for a solution to the smell, I tried one of the suggestions which is to mix the litter around manually and that definitely seemed to help, though ScoopFree recommends you just leave the box alone and let it do its thing (that's what I had been doing). Someone else recommended using a small amount of baking soda on the bottom of the tray before pouring in the crystals. I'll give that a shot on the next cartridge. Anyway, taking 15 seconds out of your day to mix around the crystals isn't a big deal and if I can squeeze at least 2 weeks of use out of the cartridge, I'll definitely bump up the rating.

1 out of 5 stars Good Idea, Horrible Execution   February 18, 2007

I purchased this product based on all the glowing reviews, thinking it would change my life, too...used it for 3 days and it went in the dumpster today...what a waste. It WAS easy to set up and my two kittens took to it right away, but the odor and tracking was just intolerable. The biggest problem was that solid waste invariably wound up behind the rake, which meant I had to clean that...a far more painful task than dealing with my old-fashioned litterbox. The door to the waste trap came down onto the waste without securing it inside. The whole thing was a disaster. Finally, there seems to me to be no reason not to manufacture this product with a plastic (i.e. permanent) tray and have the pet owner use their own litter/crystals. Their refill system is unecessarily expensive.
