Not Sure About The ODOR! July 15, 2006 alienlady (HOME) 10 out of 15 found this review helpful
I gave this Product 4 Stars simply because it is AUTOMATIC. I couldn't keep it in the bedroom because it is a motor after all and is by no means whisper quiet! It takes 20 minutes to cycle after Kitty leaves the box. That right there is my estimation on why the pee eventually sinks into the Slightly Plastic Covered CARDBOARD CARTRIDGE and needs to be replaced before or about in 30 days. I suggest using a Piece of Plastic Carpet Protector (you can get it by the roll at Home Depot) under the entire unit "JUST IN CASE!" You need to remove the Poo occasionally from the cartridge if you expect it to last 30 days. It is a fairly simple task and easy to get too. Just wear a GAS MASK or hold your breath. Thank God I bought the DOME LID for the thing! But PheeUweey from the front of the Litter BOX! I question the Odor Issue because I have blended the Fresh Step Crystals with Dr Elseys Ultra Precious Cat Litter, which is supposed to be a superior Odor control. 1/4 Fresh Step and 3/4 Dr Elseys. Not having cats before or even using litter, I figured this would be a win win situation. SO... I don't know which one is FAILING the ODOR EATER TEST here. My 2 kittens ALSO have a spare Litter box. They only get 1/2 can "wet" food in the evening, NO FISH FOOD either... They have their Dry Food down all the time! So... something STINKS in Denmark here! This is a great product, BUT the cartridges are way too expensive. I have read other reviews on other Automatic Litter Boxes where you can use Grocery Plastic bags as recepticals to replace the plaseic bags you buy for the OTHER AUTO Litter Boxes. I wonder if I made a mistake here... I was shooting for quiet motor and that didn't pan out... Now I am stuck having to pay $15.99 per cartridge and you don't save a PENNY buying the 3 pack! The shipping is OUTRAGEOUS! They got you by the nose hairs here!

Yes, the running cost is much higher than the old fashioned manual way, and a little higher than most regular automatic litterboxes. The difference, however, is that this one works! I skipped all the instructions about leaving the old litter box next to the Scoopfree etc: I simply put the scoopfree where the old one was, took each of our 2 cats individually and dipped their paws in the new litter box and...end of story. Cats are smart, they know what to do. They still occasionally come look at the rake when it's going, but they're not afraid of it, just curious. The cartridges have lasted a good 2 weeks for me (with 2 cats), without any leakage issues. There is no odor and now we have that peace of mind that even when I leave for a weekend, our cats' bathroom is always clean! Aside from the cost and the fact that it would seem you can only buy cartridges online, I can't really think of any downsides to this unit.
Wet and smelly! February 2, 2007 D. Palm (Long Beach, ca USA) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
While the mechanism seemed to work fairly well, the granules did not adequately absorb the liquid or the smell. The cartridge is supposed to last a month, but it was soaking through to our floor after less than 3 weeks. Sorry, but I just don't think this one lives up to it's claims. Or maybe our cat just pees way too much!
Wish it would reduce the odor a little better February 2, 2007 jndkr (GA, USA) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
Things I like about the Scoop Free litter box 1) it eliminates the daily chore of cleaning my litter box, 2) the mechanism is pretty quiet, and 3) my cats took to it with very little coaxing. Things I don't like about it, 1) the litter tray is expensive, 2) the litter tray lasts only one week before starting to reek [btw, I have two cats] and, 3) did I mention the litter trays are too expensive [esp when I have to change it once per week].
A reliable product, but not perfect May 6, 2007 Lianne S. Greve (Pittsburgh, Pa USA) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
After several replacements of littermaid boxes, I was about to give up and go back to a non automatic box. When I saw the ad for the scoop free box, I changed my mind & decided to give it a try. The box itself does work as advertised. The motor is fairly quiet and the only real noise when it is running is when the rake flips over. Clogging and sticking are not a problem. The reason I can't give this five stars is the disposable pans. The area for solid waste is much too small. With two cats it needs to be cleaned out every 3 or 4 days to avoid overflow & maintain some kind of odor control. I also find that sprinkling the cardboard box with baking soda or a dry litterbox deodorizer before adding the crystals helps. Yes it is expensive to replace the cartridge every 10 days, but it still beats any other method of dealing with cat waste I have found.
