2 out of 5 stars Convenient, but expensive   June 5, 2007

These worked great for me. My cats both took to the crystals immediately and I did find the cartridge idea good in theory - it was very easy to swap them out and throw the old ones away.

I had 3 major problems, however, and ended up buying the "forever litter box" (a pvc refillable tray) from eBay.

The problems I had were:
- too expensive. I have 2 cats and each cartridge only lasted 7 days at best. I think the company needs to revise its packaging. I have yet to see one reviewer that got the full 30 days (or 15 days with 2 cats) as promised.
- leaking: since i put the lid underneath, i never had anything leak all the way through, but the first layer of cardboard was definitely wet each time I changed the cartridge
- smell. By the 6th or 7th day, i could really smell the box. I live in a very small loft, so the smell is a big issue. I am not sure if it was the crystals or the wet box, but either way it was a problem.

So now, with the "forever box' I no longer have the convenience of throwing away the whole box, but at least I don't have the expense either.

4 out of 5 stars Addressing the disposability issue and the cost.   June 20, 2008

The Scoop Free litter box is the best built, easiest automatic litter box available. I've tried them all. Everybody seems to like it. However, the disposable litter trays can cost a lot of money per month if you have more than one cat. I've found a cheat that works really well to extend the life of one of those disposable Scoop Free litter pans.

Your local hardware store sells thin hard sheet plastic for use in recessed ceiling lights, etc. It needs to be thin, about 1/16th inch, and absolutely smooth on one side. Measure the inside of the box bottom and cut out a piece to exactly fit (a marking pen and scissors works fine). Lay the plastic into the bottom of the box and fill with premium hard clumping litter. Now the box will keep itself raked clean for the kitties, but you must scoop the collection box manually when needed(which requires another small fix).

The cardboard trap door needs a slight alteration. Notice that when the box is in place you cannot lift the flap to scoop under it? I found that making a cut on each side of the lid with a razor knife allows you to lift it up past the lifting levers on either side, even when the box is in place. Now you can clean the trap manually, use premium clumping litter, and keep using the litter pan over and over again.

So now the best automatic litter box on the market can be re-used over and over in a more conventional way. You will still replace those cartridges occasionally, but much less often. I maintain three cats and this method is a must for me.

Two other recommendations for the Scoop Free Litter Box: To minimize litter scattering buy the box privacy hood. Better eye appeal too. I also use a 30 x 40 inch aluminum tray underneath the whole thing (the type you find in automotive stores to put under a car that leaks oil). It's a little ugly but it works well to prevent litter scatter underneath the box.

4 out of 5 stars Good alternative to scooping   October 3, 2006

I am lazy. I hated cleaning the litter box. I have two kitties and when I bought Fresh Step, they were very very pleased.

What I like:
1) Most obvously, I don't have to scoop poop, EVER.
2) With one cat, I can almost go a full month. With two cats, the longest they will allow me to keep the cartridge in is 2.5 weeks.
3) Disposal is super easy, so is replacing the filter.
4) Not very noisy.
5) The cats aclimated to their new litter box very quickly... like the first time they used it. The crystals vs. clay litter was no big deal at all.

What I dislike:
1) The crystals don't absorbe the poop smell.
2) I bought the ugly purple hood to compensate for the litter getting everywhere when the cats jump out and for the bad poop smell. The hood did nothing to hide the smell - I wish it had a door.
3) The litter still kind of gets everywhere, but about as much as regular litter would on a hard-wood floor.
4) Refill cartridges are kind of expensive.

I mean, I wish I could train my cats to use the toilet, but that takes too much time and energy right now. This is a good alternative.

This is the best price I've found for the cartridges. They're intended to last 30 days, but I have to change them out about every 3 weeks. Still a great system!!

3 out of 5 stars It gets the job done alright.   March 1, 2007

The Scoop Free automatic box costs me about $12 mth for the refill litter cartridge (negative.) The litter comes in the form of blue crystals. They work very well for odor control and deters from cat litter tracked onto the floor. however, the crystals come in a disposible cartridge that is made out of cardboard....my cat scratches right through this. When I go to dispose of the cartridge, I notice urine has sometimes leaked through onto the floor (due to the cat nails.)
