5 out of 5 stars My curtains are saved!!!   June 29, 2007

I love this product. They were a lot easier to apply then I thought they would be. My 2 very rambunctious cats don't seem to mind them at all, they have never tried to rip them off and they even sat still when I put them on. My furniture is safe and I didn't have to torture my cats by declawing them. I couldn't be happier.

5 out of 5 stars A great alternative to the barbaric act of declawing!   June 7, 2008

I use these on 2 of my cats, and I think they are terrific. They are easy to apply, and are so much more humane than declawing. My one cat removed a few at first, but after I applied new ones, she accepted them, wearing them until they fell off over a month later, which was enough time to break her of her rug scratching habit. My other cat is still wearing hers, and does not seem to notice them. I think SoftPaws should be used along with cardboard 'scratch mats' with catnip(or another scratching alternative), since scratching is natural and necessary for cats. I don't know why another reviewer said that they were dangerous;the glue used is the same glue that people use to apply fake nails and to glue wounds shut in hospitals. For anyone thinking of declawing their cat, PLEASE try SoftPaws first!! Surgical claw removal is a horrible thing to do to a cat, and if you think it is 'no big deal' then try it on yourself first; Clip one of your toenails short enough to bleed, then think about an innocent animal going through much worse than that 20 times, not understanding why you did this to them, confused and in pain. SoftPaws allow you to save your furniture and rugs without having to put your pet through unnecessary surgery.

5 out of 5 stars Works great for my cat   February 17, 2007

I began using these with my cat over a week ago and they have worked out better than expected so far. My cat does not scratch at things intentionally (except her scratching post) but I am using them for the unintentional scratches & punctures from her front & rear claws. They were relatively easy to apply and my cat doesn't seem to mind them. However, my cat is typically quite laid back and is good at just "going with the flow". She was already used to having her nails trimmed. The instructions give a good tip in advising to fill 10 nails with glue and then pop them on in succession. My cat has lost 3 of the caps in the 1+ week she has had them. However, I'm pretty sure it was in my application (not enough glue) and not due to the caps or her pulling them off. The back claws seem to need a little more glue because those claws are shorter & stubbier. I have not had any ill side effects (glue in hair, messed up / bloody nails, etc) that are mentioned by others.

1 out of 5 stars A possibly dangerous product   September 27, 2008

I applied "soft paws" on my kitten 6 weeks ago. It took a few weeks before I could them to stay on (the comment about not clipping kittens nails before applying should have been near the top of the instructions). My kitten was not bothered by the product, nor did she not try to chew them off. I had thought I found the perfect solution to keeping my leather furniture protected. However, I started observing my kitten getting her nails stuck on her toys & blankets. This is when I decided that the product may be dangerous and I needed to let the soft paws come off & I would not to reapply them. As of today all but 2 of the covers had come off. When I came home after being gone for only a few hours I discovered a door mat had been pulled across a large room & upon further inspection I discovered that my kitten had chewed the floor mat to get her nail cover unstuck. This is a possibly a very dangerous product & consumers need to be informed of this risk. Most people would not know what this product looks like on the nail after application and when the nail grows out before they purchase softpaws and it may not be knowledge from common sense. I am extremely disturbed that I put my kitten in such distress and pain because I applied soft paws for my own convenience.

5 out of 5 stars Great option for a cooperative cat   September 28, 2008

These caps are fantastic for my cat, and they allow her to play and climb on the furniture without tearing it up or scratching me. I had considered getting her declawed as a kitten but I am a vet student and I've worked in several vet clinics and seen the process and I was hoping to avoid declawing. I called around to several vet clinics in town asking about declawing and one of the most well respected clinics here recommended these caps as an alternative and I've been using them for almost a year with no problems. I'm sure that different vets have different opinions on these but it has been a great alternative to declawing for me and I'm really glad the vet here recommended them. You do have to pay attention to how much glue is in the cap - if the glue spills over when you put it on the nail, just keep the nail extended and dab the glue off and then wait for a few seconds with the nail out and the fur held back. The glue dries very quickly, so that way the residues will dry on the nail and won't glue the cat's fur to her nail. Really after the first couple times and you get the hang of it it's pretty simple to do, and it's really great to be able to avoid declawing. My cat's not much of a scratcher, it's all incidental stuff so I don't use caps on the dew claws which makes the pack stretch further.

I will say that these caps are not for everyone - if your cat is not patient, or if you would not have someone to help you hold the cat, you probably wouldn't have much luck since you have to trim each nail and then go back and put a cap on each one. If I hadn't started my cat when she was little I'm not sure if I could get these on her, and I would probably have to declaw.
