No investments January 7, 2007 Ex User 11 out of 14 found this review helpful
Last year (for 2005) I purchased the Turbo Tax Deluxe and all things considered, was quite pleased with it. HOWEVER, I looked at the 2006 Turbo Tax Deluxe Deduction Maximizer and notice that NO security sales will be allowed (as was allowed previously in Deluxe). If that is not true, then the write-up by Intuit (compare page) is misleading when they say if you want to use TT Deluxe you must have no security sales. Confusing.
errors difficult to fix January 19, 2007 Larry Ammons (Indianapolis, IN USA) 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
I used the TurboTax software for my federal and state returns for 2005 and encountered a serious problem - the state return did not remove my social security earnings which are not taxable in Indiana. I had a difficult time getting the problem corrected but, more importantly, are there other program errors which can only be found if the return is thoroughly examined. I also found using "It's Deductible" to be very annoying and time consuming because it used the exact same categories that were used the previous year and all names must remain the same. You find this out after you have entered all of your deductions and then you have to go back and change things - ex: you can't use "ABC University" one year and "ABC Foundation" the next. It shouldn't even use last year's categories. It is too expensive to not be able to trust it. I'll be trying TaxCut this year - along with the included e-filing.
Deluxe edition is not sufficient for small investors any more! January 19, 2007 Victor (California) 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
I was disappointed that the investment function was moved to the Premier edition, which costs $25 more. All right, this year I will need to do paper filing and manual calculation for 1040 Schedule D.
TT fan but 2006 eFile Has Issues January 25, 2007 StealthLS2 (Beautiful Northern New Jersey) Been a Turbo Tax user for many years now. This year's interview process seems clearer to me than last year's, although once in a while I find some of the instructions ambiguous and occassionally have to resort to the Help files. I'm also glad the pricing is straight forward now as the rebates in the past have been a pain ... but I do think they should include eFiling at no charge or at least state the fees ($14.95 each for Federal & State) right up front. By time you add up the costs you might want to consider having your taxes prepared instead of doing it yourself. That said what I enjoy most about the product is the gratification I get from doing it myself, really undertanding my taxes and filing very early to collect my refund. So this is what frustrated me most this year, I went to file only to find out that I can't submit my return electronically because of a simple Turbo Tax error for a Box 14 item. If you're in NJ then pay attention... here is what Intuit has to say... "Hello, You are receiving this e-mail message because you signed up to be notified when a solution to the following issue became available: Error: "Box 14 Amount: New Jersey UI/HD/WD cannot be greater than $105.83" Error: "Box 14 Amount: New Jersey SDI cannot be greater than $124.05" An update that will fix this problem is expected for release in early February. If you would rather not wait until then to e-file your New Jersey return, you can print and mail a conventional paper return. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for using TurboTax! The TurboTax Support Team" So now I can't get my refund for a few weeks longer than expected, which means more money not in my pocket. Hey, I was expecting to pay those Christmas credit card bills, now I get to pay interest instead. Gee thanks Intuit for letting me know I can print a paper return and wait a few weeks anyway! Very frustrating! At least they have a notification system to update me that a fix is pending, IF you can find it on thier support site and IF you sign up for the updates. If it weren't for this I'd rate it 4 stars.
Buggy January 29, 2007 John Stefanko (Rosemount, MN USA) 11 out of 14 found this review helpful
I used Turbotax before, and went with TaxCut last year, which was ok. I thought I'd try Turbotax again this year (hoping to settle on one to use every year). I'm not impressed. The adoption credit question form has a bug that won't let you enter data in one of the fields. The form also blanks out this field. I e-mailed tech support, and got the following confusing message back (I'm guessing not from someone in the U.S.): "Dear John Stefanko, Thank you for contacting Intuit Tax Products Customer Service & Support. My name is Kenneth and I would be glad to assist you with your concern. I understand you want to know why Form 8839 line 19 is not calculating. I do apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you. May we ask if you entered If you are married filing separately, you must complete this worksheet. If all the answers are "yes", then the form will calculate. Line 19 The maximum amount that can be excluded from income for employer-provided adoption benefits is $10,960 per child. If you and another person (other than your spouse if filing jointly) each received employer-provided adoption benefits in connection with the adoption of the same eligible child, the $10,960 limit must be divided between the two of you. You can divide it in any way you both agree. Cross out the preprinted entry on line 19 and enter above line 19 your share of the $10,960 limit for that child. Line 20 Use the following chart to find the amount to enter on line 20. IF the last year you filed Form 8839 for the child was: 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, or 2005 THEN enter on line 20 the total of the amounts for the child from that Form 8839: Lines 20 and 24 IF the last year you filed Form 8839 for the child was: 2000 or 2001, THEN enter on line 20 the total of the amounts for the child from that Form 8839: Lines 16 and 20 IF the last year you filed Form 8839 for the child was: 1998, THEN enter on line 20 the total of the amounts for the child from that Form 8839: Lines 18 and 22 IF the last year you filed Form 8839 for the child was: 1997, THEN enter on line 20 the total of the amounts for the child from that Form 8839: Line 15 For more information on how to enter your values for your form 8839, please visit our Help and Info Center inside our Turbotax program. To enter click on the the Help tab. That is the one beside the Question mark icon. You will be prompted to a window for you to search the topic of your concern. Type Instructions for 8839, click on Ask and choose the first search item on the search field. We thank you and hope for your continued support in our product. I hope I have helped in resolving your issues today." Well, the form should calculate no matter what. This is a bug that they don't seem to be admitting to. The last instructions are basically from the IRS, but don't help me fill out the form in Turbotax. So now I'm stuck waiting to see if they release a fix, as I don't want to submit without seeing the calculations...
