Thanks I needed the reviews to make a decision December 27, 2007 Kays (Woodstock, GA United States) 15 out of 23 found this review helpful
I have been debating about upgrading from Quicken Home and Business 2006 to 2008 and it looks like I will be waiting for a more stable product. I use Vista which is already a little squirrely and applying an unstable release of vital software on top of it at the beginning of tax season sounds like a suicide mission. Even Intuit's own web user postings are scary. Thanks to all who are beta testing for the rest of us. We feel your pain and appreciate your sacrifice.
Quicken 2008 Stinks January 29, 2008 T. Tobin (Florida) 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
Do not upgrade to 2008. The program is ugly, buggy and the screen flickers like crazy. This company just throws an upgrade out there every year to get additional revenue. Unfortunately, they don't test the programs. I got a notice that I had to upgrade from 2005, which had no problems at all to this "junk software". Shame on you Quicken.............I hope your software engineers are reading these reviews. Your program stinks............
Nice Features, Frequent Crashes December 1, 2007 S. Hebert 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
I just purchased this product one week ago (Nov 2007). A couple of things to note: Cons: * For being a 2008 product, they are already on R4. * This thing crashes frequently. Pros: * Personal CashFlow tab and Savings Plan is very nicely done. * Security analysis is very nicely done. * Update Now is successful close to 100% of the time. This was around 40% with Quicken 2007 I haven't experienced any data loss that others mention, but this product feels like a BETA product at best, ALPHA at worst. I would personally recommend waiting at east another quarter to see what they do with fixes before making the move.
Save your PATH before installing!!! February 24, 2008 John E. Phillips (Framingham, MA USA) 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
I upgraded from Quicken 2005 to 2008. I had a couple issues you should know about if you're planning to install/upgrade: After installing, my PATH system environment variable was truncated to just the most basic: '%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem'. All the paths added by all my program installations were blown away. I only figured this out after my Lenovo Thinkpad Z61m started to blue-screen when trying to connect to a wireless network. It turns out that many programs stopped working, some completely. This is a horrible bug, and not the most obvious thing to look for when you have problems. So, if you have not yet already installed, PLEASE save your path so you can restore it afterwards: Right-click 'My Computer'; Click Advanced, Environment Variables, select PATH, click edit. Copy the value, save it in a text file, so you can restore it after the install. As for the Quicken 2008 software itself, I guess I'm happy enough, but there are some disappointments. I was hoping to use one-step-update with my bank's checking account, but my bank uses an 'enhanced-security' login process which 'remembers' your computer with a cookie; if you don't have the cookie (quicken one-step-update does not), it prompts with one of three 'challenge' questions. Quicken is not smart enough to remember the answers to these, and so every time it connects, it prompts for an answer to one of the security questions; in fact, with multiple accounts (checking, savings, credit-line), it prompts once for each account! Definitely NOT convenient. So I continue to manually download account activity, which now has added one more step --- a 'One Step Update Summary' window always appears after each download, so I now have to close that. There is a checkbox at the bottom: "Show this dialog only if there is an error", but no matter how many times I check it, it always shows the dialog. Other than that, I'm happy enough, and continue to use it much as I used the 2005 version.
Don't waste your money on Quicken 2008 January 23, 2008 John T (Florida, USA) 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! I have used Quicken for well over a decade, and it seems every new edition is worse than the previous. Q2008 is no exception. Recently, I was forced to update from Q2005 to Q2008 when Intuit informed me that they would no longer support my version. Frankly I didn't care if they stopped offering customer support, but the fact that they stopped your ability to connect with your bank online is ridiculous. I can't say that I was entirely happy with Q2005, and always felt it was a step backwards from the previous edition. However, I got by. After installing Q2008, it makes me wonder how Intuit stays in business. This is not only a step backward, but the quality of Q2008 is laughable. (Read some of the other reviews for specific details.) Although it doesn't seem to crash as often as Q2005 on Vista, the errors in calculations, graphing, reports, etc are disturbing. Intuit if you are reading this, you should be ashamed, and customers should have some recourse for Intuit basically stealing our money with faulty software.
