1 out of 5 stars turbotax sucks!   April 1, 2008
Ernest P. Barch

I will do my taxes on paper next year. I have used turbotax for many years and it seemed adequate. But, the price keeps going up and the ease of use and capabilities of the program keep going down. I don't know if it is just the online version that sucks or if the cd-rom version is also bad, but I found I could no longer view my data entries on a virtual 1040, so I could not appreciate what my paper 1040 looked like and what my entires were. The software is totally obtuse. I will never use turbotax again. At least on paper I can see what's going on and check it to see if it is correct, which I now found I was unable to do with turbotax.

4 out of 5 stars Beware the Hidden Fees   April 14, 2008

This marks my tenth year of using TurboTax products for filing my federal and state taxes. TurboTax continues to put out an excellent and user-friendly program, and this year was no different. Although it was the first year I had to file for a business, it was just as easy as doing a personal return.

My one (and continuing complaint) is that TurboTax continues to charge for e-filing. In previous years, you could get a rebate for that. TurboTax did away with the rebates a couple of years ago, claiming that most users either didn't file for the rebate or found the rebate requirements too difficult to understand/comply with. Now this year, the fee for e-filing is $17.95, up from $9.95 last year. To me, that's unreasonable. Not only are there other filing avenues that are free, but the increase in TurboTax's fee is almost 100%! And the fee is hidden until you actually get to the point of filing in the program! Its not disclosed anywhere on the product's box, in the literature, or in advertising. Currently, there is a bill being debated in the Senate, spnsored by Sens. Schumer and Akaka, that would make all e-filing free. I hope it passes.

I will continue to use TurboTax in spite of the e-filing fee. But having that fee, and not disclosing it anywhere on the outside of the box, keeps the product from gettin 5 stars. I give it 3.5 stars - minus 1 star for the outrageous e-file fee and minus one-half star for hiding it until its time to actually e-file the return.

5 out of 5 stars My accountant died   February 15, 2008

After using the same accountant for 12 years, he died. I used TurboTax for this year's taxes. The box isn't as funny as my old accountant, but I saved $300, got my taxes done simply and accurately, and I already have my refund.

5 out of 5 stars easy as pie   February 22, 2008

This is the 2nd year I have purchased Turbo Tax, and I can certainly recommend the product. Last year, we used the Deluxe Edition, and this year we used the Home and Business Edition. Both were easy to use and covered all the items we needed to address.
I used to pay over $100 for tax prep, and was happy to do it because the preparer was well trained, but I am very confident that we have just as accurate a return as we had before.
We used Turbo Tax for our son's return as well, downloading a different state's software. That, too, is easy and saves him from paying a lot of money for his very simple returns.
Don't hesitate if you are considering a purchase. I think you'll be surprised how easy it is to do.

1 out of 5 stars Not easy to use   February 25, 2008

I bought this product to use for our home daycare business and it was not easy to use at all. I ended up sending everything to our accountant when Turbo Tax estimated that we owed thousands in taxes. We did owe, but our accountant came up with a figure approximately $3000 less than Turbo Tax did. I am not an accounting major but I do have a strong math background and I always did our taxes before we had our own business but this product confused and stressed me out totally.

We'll be adding even more exciting features to assist you in the coming year.
