3 out of 5 stars Quality & Quantity trumps Presentation   December 2, 2006

I was disappointed with the software presentation aspects, especially how it lags considerably behind its competitors like Encarta - the layout is basic and a tad amateurish, the presentation is far from slick, the Atlas has maps that are simple, tiny square & sparse things that you can't zoom into, there is no virtual globe, quality of audio and video entires are soso and the response of the software is slow....but then....I started reading the articles - Feynman mini-bio written by James Gleick, Dickens by GK Chesterton, Relativity by Bergman, Intro to Quantum physics by Brian Greene...and so on...then you realize that this is Britannica, not Wikipedia or Encarta and THAT and THAT ALONE is worth the price of admission (especially if you get this on a deal...;-)..) - points deducted because in this day and age in the 21st century, lack of a whiz-bang slick look&feel to a software product is inexcusable. Also many minor gripes like Updates don't get downloaded and added to the article like Encarta but things that you additionally see, only online and that too only if you register(free) - however - a must-have for knowledge junkies dedicated to quality

3 out of 5 stars valuable content, abysmal software   January 1, 2007

Every time I use it, I find a new bug, performance or usability problem. If it wasn't for the content, I would return it and never bought another edition. I use it only when I have to, because working with it is extremely frustrating.

4 out of 5 stars Disasterlad on Britannica   January 9, 2007

I trust the information I find from Britannica and so invested in the 2007 Britannica Ultimate Reference Suite.

It has something for everyone.

I use it side by side with Microsoft Encarta and together I get a more complete subject review.

I prefer the content of Britannica but for ease of use Encarta is still superior.

I look forward to Britannica making the interface and ease of use better in future productions and that is why I am only able to award 4 stars.

3 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia Britannica review   November 9, 2006

I would have given it 5 stars if it had been like the product I had on my last computer, except that it seems to have become a bit more difficult to actually navigate. The dictionary part doesn't let you type in the whole word before it starts making up a list of words and that process slows down the search because the more letters you type - and especially if you have Any typing speed Whatsoever - the less letters it recognizes. So if you try to type in the whole word "adjacent" for example, you might get as much as "adja" typed and then the rest of the letters get put on hold until the list comes up at which point it recognizes the next letter that it caught AFTER the list came up... which may well be the "t" at the end! Difficult and cumbersome.

Also, the other Britannica I had had very user friendly links and an easy to understand format. You looked up your word once and it gave you a list of different ways you could view the word - enclylopedia, dictionary, thesaurus, pictures, etc. This one is not so easy. The only parts I understand so far are the encylopedia search and the dictionary search... which, when clicked on comes up in a completely different window!

Thanks for asking though.

i am underwhelmed with the dvd-rom from britannica. it ia a waste of time

and money. their main object is to sell britannica with snatches to create

interest.these dvd-roms should be sent free to arouse interest. i now own

two dvds and both are unsatisfactory.
