Great product, tricky salesmanship November 21, 2007 D. Rosebaugh (Calif) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I've used Trend for several years. The product itself is excellent, I trust it completely. They've been bugging me about renewing my subscription for about a month, although it doesn't expire for another 18 days from today. I finally went online today and renewed. I was very upset to find that "auto-renew on my credit card" was NOT an option! They'll automatically renew my subscription every year til kingdom come, without my consent! The fine print told me I could "opt out of auto-renew" by clicking on a tiny difficult to find link on another page, and jumping thru some hoops. I did that, but SHOULD NOT HAVE TO DO THAT! The auto-renew should CERTAINLY be optional. I emailed Trend, and let them know there are a lot of other options out there for PC protection, including some free ones. Next year, I'll buy the boxed Trend from Amazon or Best Buy, I won't be ordering online again!
Requires 1GB RAM November 29, 2007 tkhorse (Pelham, New York) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have used Trend Micro 2006 on several computers and found it to be quite good. But when they expired and I bought Trend Micro, I discovered too late that it required 1 GB in RAM as minimum requirement. So I am having to buy two 512MB memory boards to put into my computer, which added considerably to the cost of all this. I hope that Trend Micro 2008 does not take up so much memory so that I am exactly where I started.
Try before you buy December 18, 2007 A. Rhodes (Oregon) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
All internet security software sites offer free evaluations for their software, including this one. Try them before you buy them since I have not found one that runs great on all computers. If you decide to buy one, get the best price and then simply put the security key into the evaluation copy to keep it going. All the suites give some people problems. I have three computers in my house, a superfast computer, an aging computer that runs everything fine except new computer games, and my kids old 1.5 ghz klunker. All are XP computers built by me. Trend Micro works great on mine and my wife's computer. But I had to downgrade to 2006 on my kid's computer (the newer 2007 three user key code worked fine in it). And 2006 is obsolete, but I don't care on my kids computer since it does not have "secure", just basically clean so all their software runs fine. I tried this version for two weeks and then switched to a trial of the Pro version and purchased it (I liked the extra features). However I think this this version provides good basic protection. PC magazine felt that the firewall was a weak point, but this only if you share resources over a home network. And caveat, I did not test spam protection on anything since my email account does that and does it well. The complaints about conflicts with other security programs are real. And if you have a computer that is already infested with viruses, I have read this software is extremely difficult to install. But as stated nothing works fine on all three. I tried Nortons and it would not run on my computer and gave me nightmares trying to remove it. I could not deinstall it, the web site's utility to remove the software did not work neither, along with standard Windows deletions even including registry manipulations. I then booted up in command mode and used commands to delete Norton, but that caused me to lose internet connections. After three hours of trying to get back a connection, I gave up and reinstalled Windows. We use Norton at work, and since I am not happy with it there I am not sure why I tried it at home (it has advantages in a network setting). I also tried BitDefender, and at first I thought it was the best out there. Fast even on my kids computer, bullet proof and initially I thought easy to use. Then I got infected when the firewall and virus protection turned itself off. Maybe it was user error and maybe a problem with my system based on other reviews. And I ignored the two red X's warning me, so I was dense not to access the help screen for a day. Otherwise it is the only 5 star product security suite out there. I left it on my kids computer for all 30 days and it was fantastic. They do all sorts of things you should not do and nothing got on their computer. I hated the user interface with the 2007 version of McAfee, so the 2008 version never got evaluated. I tried the free Avast which is great for basic protection, but I think too limited for total protection if you use your computer for things like taxes and on-line shopping, even in combination with something like Adware. So I just ordered a CD for TM 2008 Security Pro from Amazon and plan on putting in the security code into my evaluation copy. And maybe in three months I will be upset and downgrade this to 1-2 stars because my computer slowed to a crawl.
New Review December 19, 2007 Dennis P. Donovan 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I just read all of the previous reviews and was nervous downloading this product. I have a brand new HP PC with Vista Home Premium, furnished with a Norton trial package. I removed Norton as previously recommended, and then downloaded the 30-day free trial for this product. I had absolutely no problems. The entire process was very easy and quick. I consider myself an intermediate type user, I am not a computer geek. If I could do this, anyone could.
Avoid PC-cillin January 27, 2008 Peter L. Nash (Sacramento, CA USA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have used Trend Micro PC-cillin and I have had serious problems. They allow you to install the program on up to 3 computers. It seemed like a good deal. My main computer crashed and I had reinstall everything from scratch, operating system and all programs. When I asked Trend Micro for support to reinstall my PAID FOR PC-cillin thay replied I had USED UP my 'Seats". I have therefore been told to forfeit my paid fees and subscription--VERY BAD. Another bad thing: I found that PC-cillin blocked most of my computers normal running processes and installs of legitimate programs.(From cd's--not downloads!)You get a constant interruption of screens asking you to allow or block. You need protection from bugs and viruses coming in from the internet, not some zealous guard treating your computer like it was a prison. I'll look elsewhere for anti-virus protection.
