Still like it... February 27, 2008 wwgreen 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I assist many people with computer problems, and so I am occasionally asked to recommend/install security apps on many different machines. I have used Norton, McAfee, and many free programs extensively in the past, so I can compare TM with an open mind. I have been a user of TM PC-Cillin/Internet Security since 2006 versions (3 systems here at work), and have installed it on another 6 systems. I have always been impressed. Pros : 2008 version of TM is still the best solution for what we need (simple to use, light system load, good protection), and I continue to recommend it for the normal workplace/home network. I had no problems installing, except that I had to manually uninstall 2007 version. Our network is well-secured based on many security tests done, and it continues to offer decent detection rates. It is simple, especially if you are familiar with prior versions, and most default settings will work fine for most users right out of the box. Security is as good as the person in charge of it, so tweaking is always recommended, but TM seems to be doing what it is intended to do. Resource use is very light on our medium-level WinXP systems. Cons : I miss some of the wording/options from the 2007 version, but just have to get familiar with 2008. I have not thoroughly tested McAfee's 2008 version, so perhaps that may be better overall. Systems slow down quite a bit while doing an actual scan, but no more than other apps from my experience. Thunderbird is somewhat left out as no anti-spam toolbar is offered. Some other quirks are found in the interface, but no big deal. Overall, I'm still happy so far with how TM IS2008 is performing. If I wanted to learn a new app for myself and my customers, I'd try McAfee or Kaspersky, but TM does the job well enough for me that I don't need to look further at this time.
Uninstalled After 2 Months March 15, 2008 PJC (Phoenix AZ) 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
About three months ago I purchased this product after reading an article (Consumer Reports, I think) giving this very high marks in many of the critical areas of computer protection. What the article did not say is how much this protection slowed email and other computer functions. It was not uncommon to take more than five minutes to boot the machine and receive fewer than one-half dozen messages. After two months I couldn't take it any more and went back to Norton. Never again!
Works except for the annoying virus scan. April 29, 2008 J. Ehlers (United States) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have had trouble with the virus scan. Norton allowed me to stop the virus scan and resume it again. Trend Micro does not. Running Windows XP on a Intel chip at 3.2 GHz with 1.0 GB of RAM, I schedule a virus scan everyday for my hard drive. Trend Micro starts a virus scan when I start using my computer as it comes out of stand by or out of hibernating. This is as expected. The virus scan noticeable slows down my computer. However, Trend Micro gives me absolutely no way to stop the scan and/or pause the scan and resume the scan later. Very annoying. I called technical support and was told to kill the virus scan process. I keep going into the Task Manager almost every other day and killing the UfNavi process. I manually start the scan again when I'm done with the computer for awhile. I have been very disappointed with their email customer support: (1)The first person did not understand my problem. I got the reason why the virus scan was happening but nothing to do about stopping and starting the virus scan again. I again explained the same problem and proposed a product enhancement and/or bug and/or user interface problem: Give users a way to stop the virus scan and/or pause the scan and resume the scan later. The stop and/or pause and resume "button" should be easily accessible on the "Overview" window; users should not have to search for it on some pull down menu. (Norton does this.) (2) The next email said there was a pause and stop button when the computer was past 9-10%. I never saw such a button. I asked technical support where this button was. I left the Trend Micro window open during the first 15 minutes of the scan and did not see any button. I asked where the button was. (3) The third email told me to disable the Trend Micro suite to solve my problem. No, I don't want to effectively disable the entire Trend Micro suite which would leave my computer open to spam, viruses, etc. I guess that would solve the problem! I haven't heard back yet. :-) I will not buy Trend Micro again.
Better Than 2007 November 2, 2007 D. Blizzard (New York City, NY, USA) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Although I've only had the software for a few weeks, I can tell that it's better than the 2007 edition. First of all, it's faster and doesn't use many system resources. Second, it's 64-bit compatible. This is especially important to me and influenced my decision to upgrade from the 2007 version. The upgrade wasn't very smooth. The software installed fine but when activation began, the software detected my 2007 edition and determined that I was not the primary user. I used the primary license with XP, then I wiped it out when I went to Vista 64-bit. This meant that I could not upgrade. An email, and about two weeks later, Trend Micro sent me a new serial which solved the problem. Trend Micro does offer free customer support and allows the software to be installed on up to three computers, which is a good value especially to families. Unless an update really messes up my system, I'm sticking with the software.

With minor hesitation I give Trend's 2008 version a rating of five stars. It installed perfectly and not only seems to run well, but my computer seems peppier too. One minor problem was that the pre-installation instructions on the installation disk, in the attached booklet, and in the incompatable software list on the website were confusingly different. The website said to uninstall the earlier version; the installation disk said there was no need. I did uninstall it to be safe, and it worked well. The previous version had me get rid of Windows Defender, and this one booted Spybot and Adaware Personal. I guess I should get over my obsession with spyware removal, and trust Trend to take up the slack. For Spybot, the incompatable software list contains two references. Unfortunately, I did not find the one at the bottom until after uninstalling. It adds this note: "it is necessary to undo the changes made by the Immunize function of Spybot before you uninstall the product." Oops. So far my failure to heed this instruction has not caused problems. Again, someone should have overseen the pre-installation communications to ensure better clarity. I shelled out extra bucks to get the "Pro" download. It contains some nifty utilities (clear unnecessary clutter files, fix broken shortcuts, etc.). Trend has not yet completed the system-restore feature and hopefully will get it right. Last year, some of the extras bundled in the package did not work. The Pro package also includes security for online transactions. This year's format is comfortably similar to the last one. I am waiting to see if they fixed the notification of system changes by aggressive software. The last version froze in the attempt. My one wish is that the downloading of updates could be scheduled for a time when I am off the computer. I did change the default interval of every 3 hours to every 24. The last version interfered with other online activity with sudden update downloads. All in all, I am very happy with Trend. One significant benefit is that the elimination of Spybot freed up memory that results in a peppier computer. I really have appreciated Spybot, and previously was willing to sacrifice that performance in an attempt to block spyware before it could land. I think the 2008 Internet Security contains something like it.
