Adequate, but nothing stands out as compelling. Some kinks and nuisances. March 3, 2008 almosthappy (San Diego, CA, California) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Live OneCare is a product that feels more like an afterthought to promote another one of Microsoft's many services and products. The entire software package is designed around and as an effort to promote Microsoft's Windows Live concept. The software itself is a collection of frequently used utilities, including virus protection, personal firewall, backup/restore utility, tune-up utility, and spyware protection. The collection offers nothing new or value added compared to other all-in-one security/utility suites, like those offered by Norton, CA, or McAfee. Also, most if not all of the components included in the OneCare package have their open and freeware alternatives and counterparts. Granted, it is convenient to have everything neatly packed in one package. However, this only advantage is negated by the awkward and consumer-hostile pricing plan. First, the software assumes and REQUIRES a Windows user to have an activated Windows Live account. Secondly, once installed, you only have 90 days to decide if you want to activate or not. In order to activate, you need the aforementioned Live account and also get ready to shell out $49.95 for annual subscription. And from my testing, there doesn't seem to be a way to cancel your subscription OTHER THAN CALLING Microsoft customer service - which is not exactly something I want to schedule in my calendar, ever. If you choose not to activate, the whole thing is useless and does nothing but to bug you with endless pop-ups reminders for activation. Based on these two things, I'm not entirely enthused about the whole product. As I said, even on a purely technical performance perspective, nothing about OneCare is overly compelling to the point I can overlook these extremely costly and irritating annual pricing plans.
OneCare will never completely defragment your hard disk March 4, 2008 T. Pritchard 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I just bought a new laptop with OneCare 2.0 preinstalled. My system is much faster than when I used Norton and (so far - 1 month!) I have been mostly happy with it. However, I noticed that the weekly tune-up kept coming back with a message saying "C:/ Defragmentation partially completed*. Because of high levels of disk fragmentation, starred volumes could not be completed in this Tune-Up and are marked for defragmentation in later Tune-Ups". I presumed this was because my computer was new and I had recently installed lots of new programs so I ran the defragmenter included in the Vista operating system which took a few hours but did the job. I then immediately ran a tune-up through OneCare and the defragmentation came back as being successful. However, 2 days later (during which time I only used the computer to check my email), the automatic tune-up returned the same message of "Partially completed... High levels of disk fragmentation...". After connecting with a OneCare representative via chat, I was told that the defragmenter would never complete the defragmentation process. To quote directly from the chat: "...as for the tune-up process on OneCare, it really doesn't complete the tune-ups." and "In order for you to complete it, you have to manually do that defragmentation on your local disk." In answer to my question of what's the point of including defragmentation in the OneCare program then, I was told: "As part of the tune-up process, and since OneCare is only sharing some services of your Vista, it doesn't complete it.", which makes absolutely no sense to me! Obviously, the defragmenter is included for free in your OS but if OneCare says it will automatically defragment your computer during programmed tune-ups, it should do this 100% every time, especially if you just did a complete defragmentation two days ago. As I say, apart from that, I have not (so far!) had any other problems but I now understand the paranoia in relation to Microsoft.
Works great March 11, 2008 Jenn B (Vermont USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a great product. I was very excited about this product. We have an older computer and I thought that the repair/fix part of this product would be great for us. I also liked that when it was installed it recognized that we had a printer on the main computer and it asked if we wanted to network our laptop. We had always wanted to do that but didn't know how, this program made it very easy. The only downfall is that there are a lot of pop-ups asking us to run things and restart every few days. I guess that means it is doing it's job, but it can be annoying. Overall a good product.
A few bugs to work out, but okay. April 11, 2008 IdahoWoman 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
I had a hard time installing this software. I had to delete the program that was previously installed on my computer (McAfee) before I could install this one BUT I didn't find that out until AFTER I had downloaded the software (which took almost five hours). Then it automatically deleted itself (the downloaded software) when it couldn't install because of the other program. Ughh! Needless to say, I had to re-download the software (another five hours)and then I ran into another snafu when I went to install the download. I couldn't immediately resolve the problem and the website was no help either. After trying every trick in the book, I finally realized there was a little nugget left from the McAfee program. After I deleted that, it installed successfully. I am no computer geek so getting this installed was a real chore. It seems to work fine now that it's up and running.
Goodbye Norton! Hello Windows Live OneCare! May 17, 2008 puravida (Seattle, WA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a great product at a great price [...]. I was able to install it quickly and immediately noticed a difference in performance as compared to Norton. Internet browsing is faster and the automatic tune up is awesome (not everyone has time to defragment their computer on a regular). This product comes with three licenses so that it can be installed on three computers! Highly recommended.
