100% safe, by keeping me off the Internet. March 9, 2008 F. Gokey (Fargo, ND USA) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I feel like Charlie Brown kicking at the football as Lucy pulls it away yet again. The reviews say this Norton Security 2008 doesn't slow your computer down as much as the earlier versions, so I bit. Now I'm on my back looking at the sky cursing myself for being so stupid, after blowing a whole weekend. The product is 100% effective. Since my computer can no longer connect to the Internet, it will be completely safe. The product didn't install. I downloaded the nice "removal tool" to get rid of the earlier version. (Of course, it took all the other Norton software I had, which this product will not replace, without asking me. I could live with that if it had worked.) The product still didn't install. I tried their online tech support, and this really nice guy from India took control of my computer literally worked to install it for probably 2-3 hours. He was very dedicated, and got it installed. Unfortunately, my computer would no longer accept an IP address. I have now spent several more hours uninstalling the product. I now have lost all the Norton products I had, and have no Internet protection. However, my computer remains 100% safe from hacking, as it will still not renew its IP address, and consequently will not connect to the Internet. My DSL service provider spend another hour with me, and finally gave me a disconnected number to Compaq. Thank you Symantec. I really didn't need either that weekend, or my Internet connection. Its all my fault however. I have had years of bad experiences with Norton software. Silly me for thinking they might have improved it. Stupid...Stupid...Stupid.
Solution for computer slow down March 23, 2008 T. Beidler (Columbus, OH) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I have had the same slow down problems with NIS 2007 and 2008 and finally read online a solution that worked for me. Most of the slow downs occur when NIS is doing a "Live Update" of virus definitions, etc. Even though I selected NOT to do live update in the NIS screen, it would still start updating on its own. The solution I found was that you have to get into Windows "Services" to turn-off the automatic live update option there, too. The instructions I founds were: 1. Click on Start 2. Click on Run 3. Type 'services.msc' 4. Click OK 5. Scroll down and highlight "LiveUpdate" 6. Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties 7. Click the start button 8. Select Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar 9. Click OK The "Start" button was "grayed out" on my computer, so I just skipped to #8. There is probably also an item for "live update scheduler" that you should set to "Manual", too. That has eliminated the annoying slow downs for me. When I am stepping away from the computer for a while, I'll run the LiveUpdate at that time.
Horrible Software, Horrible Experience, Try Anything Else November 14, 2007 Joseph Koheleth (Vermont) 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
First, please be aware that I have been a loyal Norton customer for over a decade. Unfortunately, I will not be able to continue to use their products. This software will not even install on my Windows XP SP2 DELL computer. From contacting their tech support, I still have all five chat incident account numbers, and after five times (and more than that many hours--can you believe it), Symantec Tech Support cannot even help me to actually get the product to install. The software is bad, the tech support is bad, try something else! I am a very unhappy customer and Symantec owes me for QA'ing their faulty product.
Norton Antivirus - many problems November 22, 2007 George Rieke (Tucson, Arizona) 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
This software is a disaster - the reviews that give it a high rating must have been conducted under special circumstances. I started with Norton 360, and it simply would not load on either of my computers. The problem appeared to be a combination of bugs in the software and interference with previously installed Norton products (although I followed all instructions to remove them). Almost everything I did resulted in my being directed to the Norton site to download a patch, as if they were going to release the beta test version in a few months. I received a refund and decided to buy Norton Antivirus on the assumption that it was a mature product. This assumption has proven partially true. I have managed to get it installed on one computer so it works reasonably well, but the other is still a failure. I have spent many hours removing and reinstalling and following other instructions of Norton technical help to no avail. Again, the number of patches is alarming. I conclude that Norton is selling defective, inadequately debugged software and suggest careful consideration before buying any of their products.
Thankless December 2, 2007 Chuck (Michigan USA) 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
I've been a faithful customer of Norton products for over ten years, but with on-going and worsening difficulties with their products they are showing me thankless arrogance. They are demonstrating less and less care about the customer's experience with their products. Over the last two weekends I've spent some 5 hours dong what they tell me to do to uninstall then reinstall and then again today to uninstall and reinstall. First they recommended a complete unistall of all Norton products before reinstall of NIS 2008. This morning, a week later, I sit down to get something done and I have a new warning that I'm not protected and to uninstall and reinstall again. I didn't need to contact Norton support because the steps to do the required reinstalls were almost obvious. My connection is high-speed cable, but 5 hours in a year is more time than I spend maintaining all my other software combined. I believe that anybody can make a mistake and should be given the benefit of the doubt, but it has become a pattern with Symantec products. I've stopped my automatic renewal and will purchase something else when my current subscription expires. If I'm asked to uninstall and reinstall one more time I'll have to buy a different product earlier than planned and attempt to get a refund. Moving forward.....
