Suse 9.2 Novell not bad. November 16, 2004 Forrest Carroll (Cleveland, TN USA) 14 out of 22 found this review helpful
I held out due to the change when Novell bought suse. This was thier 1st togetherness release. This will be a short review. Suse is nice up to date and easy to upgrade *due to YAST* (YOU) an installer. However, This is easy to use with noobies (new users) but your linux knowlage won't expand much with all rpms. (installer like things that need no compiling). The price is high to me compared to Mandrakes 39.99. Linux is free online, but for users like me on dialup I musy buy/contribute to the distro. Usually they are not to expensive. This one seemed too high 2 me, but I gave ita whirl. All installed fine. easy as pie. (Ps- make sure u remember your moniters hz khz and vertical and hortizontal. mine was defaulted at 1600x1200 180hz which was way too high. Not al defaults are right btw. Check and go slow. Gfx are good, sound is good. Lots of compatability. Even has firefox on it. woohoo! a nice release. a little steep in price but doable. i see enterprise editions and a future becoming as redhats. Mandrake is fallback. 4of5. cheaper price, and maybe something was missing, I felt aslight bit incomplete.
Problems with network November 18, 2004 Robert J. Frey (Stony Brook, NY) 13 out of 16 found this review helpful
Although SUSE 9.2 appears to be a well designed product with many useful features, I'm unable to get it to function as a DHCP client on my network, so I can't get onto the Internet or access any local network resources. There is perhaps some subtle tweak here that might get it to work but after spending an hour on the telephone with one of SUSE's support staff neither he nor I was able to find it. After reviewing some of the posts on various Linux forums, networking problems appear to be common with this release. Similar problems were not experienced by posters with 9.1. This is a pretty serious failing and I strongly recommend that you stay away from this product until these issues are resolved.
Nearly Convinced November 24, 2004 FV-S (Raleigh, NC USA) 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
Having tired of the numerous Windows updates and having adopted Mozilla and OpenOffice as my primary tools, I decided to step into the Linux community. I downloaded two distributions (one was SuSE Personal 9.1) before purchasing the SuSE Professional 9.2 product. I've come away 90% satisfied, but the remaining 10% is keeping me away from a complete migration to Linux. SuSE installed on an old machine (P-III) without issue. The two stumbling blocks I encountered: I never was able to access shared files on other PCs on my home network (the non-SuSE trial package I tried did not have that issue) and Support informed me that several packages (Nvu in particular) are only on DVD format (the package comes with 2 DVDs and 5 CDs). Having only CD units on my PCs, I'm disappointed in the last limitation. It strikes me that I'm about 6-12 months away from being able to have a transparent migration to Linux.
Super smooth Install. Easy to configure. November 29, 2004 Venkatesh Somasundaram (Plymouth, MN) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I installed SUSE 9.2 on my Dell Inspiron 4000 laptop. It is Super Easy to Install. YaST utility lets you easily configure devices and install/install software so easily. Very straight forward. I installed my Microsoft wireless card (MN-520) and set up a home network. My SUSE machine is my favourite among all the machinces I have now. Highly recomended.
Just so easy February 5, 2005 Relax with Macs (Hobart, Tasmania Aust.) 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
I agonised over moving from MS Widows to Linux for a number of months. I researched a number of distributions and read all the articles. In the end I choses SuSE 9.2 professional because: AMD64 support Lots of applications [over 1000 I'm told] already on the disk Ease of installation Support Backing by Novel What I found was that the installation was almost too easy - I expected to learn a little bit about Linux as it asked me questions - in the end it just ran like a dream. All my hardware, ADSL and printer were correctly identified. It literally worked straight out of the box. The only real problem is that you can be a bit overwhelmed with all the free applications that come packaged with SuSE Professional - I could choose from: 2 different desktops [I choose KDE], 3 full functional Office suites, 4 drawing packages, etc. etc. I know it shouldn't make any difference but the desktop [KDE] looks attractive. I am usually more interested in functionality and utility than good looks but the desktop is very easy on the eye and is organised well. The SuSE Yast application is very good and makes the whole thing very easy. If you don't want to learn Linux and just run applications, watch DVD's and work on the WEB; then SuSE will make it very easy [and save a heap of money at the same time]. If you actually want to learn Linux then you should get a pocket guide and play around in the Linux shell.
