It's fine for basic stuff June 6, 2007 W. Yuen 5 out of 22 found this review helpful
it's really FREE You can actually download an .iso file and burn it onto a CD unlike other distributions (SUSE/RedHat) where you have 5 CDs to burn Ubuntu Linux is good for web surfing has good driver support (scanner driver not there however hmm) doesn't really need antivirus/antispyware it has openoffice (alternative to MS office) It has GIMP (free alternative to Adobe photoshop and much better) it has a CD/DVD burner included and some sound/media apps....hehe Effects like beryl (the cube) runs great even on my HPze4335us (4-yr old Win2000/XP made laptop) very space saving <2 GB used in the initial install:) however, you need to learn the code to run ubuntu or any linux correctly.. ubuntu always asks for my "root" account when I make system changes and I'm typing "su" into the command terminal to try to install a program made for the Linux OS. and my password doesn't work...so..that's a downside for me (my root password works elsewhere just not in the terminal) I would rather click the icon the way through...more interactiveness just like Windows instead of typing it lengthy commands...if not I would give ubuntu 5 stars
Ubuntu Rocks. I just dont know why people still use windows. July 3, 2007 I don t buy copy protected CD s!!! 5 out of 9 found this review helpful

Ubuntu beats Windows October 6, 2007 Mitch (Eagle Lake TX.) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
Ubuntu does what you need a computer to do. When installing it is easiest to use a drive on the primary slave position. After that Ubuntu will find just about everything already installed in your computer.. Linux has a full line of open source applications to do what ever job you need to do.. My install went very smoothly and easily. Using broadband networks is plug and play. The programs have some names that might throw you off but the transition is easy. Don't let the word "linux" scare you anymore. Ubuntu takes the fear out and puts in usablilty. After installing look up a application called Automatix and install it. This makes tweaking your system and downloading other applications much easier. You will also find the forums more than helpfull and very friendly. Make sure to use them for easier problem solving.. Ubuntu also has the stability that Microsoft dreams about. Last but surely not least.. You can't beat the price.
Warning...linux is addictive! August 3, 2007 Mugs99 (California) 4 out of 13 found this review helpful
This is an edit of my previous review of ubuntu. I first gave ubuntu a one star rating and warned about ubuntu's lack of support for dial-up...But the benefits of ubuntu for dial-up users makes ubuntu a five star operating system and it's value far exceeds XP. I would suggest buying "The Official Ubuntu" book. The install cd is packaged with the book and the time you'll save looking for answers is well worth the extra ten bucks. Buy a real modem. I bought an Actiontec 56K serial modem here on Amazon for under twenty bucks. It works great! Download gnome-ppp (it's free) while you're waiting for ubuntu and your new modem to arrive. Copy it to a cd or floppy and install it on ubuntu. Gnome-ppp is what makes ubuntu work with dial-up. You'll now be able to spend your time surfing instead of bogged down by XP and anti-virus updates...and that's a huge improvement over windoze! My connection speed went from 26.4K to 28.8K, not a big increase but web page images load in about half the time...don't know why. Now for the warning. I'm not a geek but ubuntu has addicted me. Linux can easily become a game and a great game it is. Thousands of quests and mysteries to solve.
XP style interface but slower August 27, 2007 Alberto Martinez (Weston, Fl USA) 4 out of 8 found this review helpful
I'm a geek. I know my computers. I took Ubuntu and loaded it in a different disk drive used as master. I had XP loaded in a similar drive used as master. I switched the drives to go from one operating system to another for the simple reason that I wanted to benchmark each operating system. Although Ubuntu is free and is decently supported by the ubuntu site and lynux drivers, it was slower than XP. Specifically when I used java based applets. If you're not a power user (like me) and don't want to pay gobs to Billy Gates, then get Ubuntu. Their support site is awesome and very good people are dedicated in the project, however, you still have to know more about computers than you would with XP. Vista is hosed, take it from me, put up with the speed reduction than be thrown back to the dark ages with Vista. There is less support for Vista than Ubuntu. Go figure.
