3 out of 5 stars Very Good - Not Perfect   March 29, 2008
Too much to do in Kansas City (Kansas City, MO USA)

Macspeech Dictate with usb Headset /microphone I purchased this product as a crossgrade from iListen 1.8. This is a dramatic improvement from iListen in terms of accuracy and ease of use. Other reviewers are correct that more training features are needed. The application needs some refinement. However, that has to be taken in context. iListen had a pretty well developed set of training and correction features which I had to use constantly because the application's accuracy was not very good. While I would appreciate the training and correction features that have been promised for a future (free) update, I don't have to do very much correction. For that simple reason, I'm reasonably happy with this purchase. I expect I will be very happy with the product after a couple of updates. I'm running MacSpeech Dicatate on a MacBook Pro 2.0 ghz machine that is almost 2 years old. I am using the latest iteration of Tiger and I am using the USB mike that came with my original iListen purchase.

UPDATE: 4/10/08 - I would now give the product a 4 out of 5. Because of its accuracy, I am using Dictate more and more each day. For what it is worth, I did not get one of the defective disks, so I did not have that annoyance to deal with. I consider this a real time saver. The old iListen product was mainly useful to give my hands a rest, but it didn't seem to save me much time. Dictate is actually making me more productive.

1 out of 5 stars major problem   April 8, 2008

After 15 years of using Mac computers, this product has been the most problematic software I have ever attempted to install. Both their tech support and customer support acknowledge overwhelming calls regarding difficulties with this product. I have been using iListen prior to this software purchase. I, would not give it one star if I could.

It is unclear to me why Dragon, leading speech recognition software company decided to involve in MacSpeech project. Out of box the software did not work. Although I contacted technical support four times they didn't inform me that the software had a defect eventually I figured out from another source and they mailed me another one. After installing the software I noticed this was not Dragon. You can't teach new words or train words to this software and to give simple commands you have to go to speech tab and select between dictation and command and many more problems. it was waste of 187$

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Product - I had the disk problem - slow support but worth it.   April 10, 2008

MacSpeech Dictate is pretty good. I'm using it to write this review, I had the disc problem and had to phone support to get help -- support was "okay". In comparison to Dragon naturally speaking on the PC, MacSpeech Dictate pass some nice features. Once you have gone through the user setup, [ including training ] you're presented with a simple interface. A simple icon for the microphone, and an available list of commands. For me the tool works quite well, though I admit I have to use the "special delete" command every so often. Smile.

Frankly, I'm pretty impressed even though I was frustrated when the disk did not work. MacSpeech sent me a new disc and all is now well. Check it out is my recommendation.

1 out of 5 stars Not ready for prime time   April 15, 2008

Like others, I received this product about two weeks ago and have had numerous problems trying to establish a user profile. The program has frequently crashed when trying to establish or update the profile.

I am running a Intel Mac book which also has a boot camp running Windows Vista and naturally speaking. Once I sorted through the profile issue, I have still had many problems with the program's accuracy. I have read identical passages into both with three different microphones (one of which was the certified version provided the dictate software). Strangely, given the fact that these programs supposedly used the same speech recognition engine, NaturallySpeaking is much more accurate. For some reason dictate appears to have much more problem placing my speech in context and makes off the wall substitutions. I will also echo others' comments on the inability to train new words into the system.

Hopefully there will be an update at some point with these bugs fixed. For right now my recommendation would be to wait until the new version comes out and then wait for some other poor souls who saw the MacWorld award to buy it and test the new version.

For now, I will continue to use boot camp and NaturallySpeaking on the Windows side of my machine when I have long passages to write.

We'll be adding even more exciting features to assist you in the coming year.
