5 out of 5 stars No Problems with Vista   December 23, 2007

Unlike M. Walters, I have had no problems installing, launching or running Rosetta Stone V.3 on my Dell Inspiron 1720 notebook with the Vista Home Premium operating system. I simply opened the box, read the directions, followed them and I was using the program ten minutes later. It has given me no trouble whatever and I am entirely satisfied. It is possible that M. Walters got a bum disc perhaps, or is having some other individual problem; but I don't think that staying away from this excellent software because you are using Vista is necessarily good advice for everyone.

2 out of 5 stars Extremely frustrating   March 13, 2008

I purchased this product because I wanted to brush up on my Spanish. As a graduate student I passed a fluency examination in Spanish. However, I found Rosetta Stone extremely frustrating to use. One, many of the lessons are repetitive on a level that is just too simple. They could be given to a person with zero knowledge of the language and they would pass with flying colors, but have no idea how to speak or write the language. Second, the program has you repeating very basic sounds and often the sound response the user speaks is rejected by the software. It quickly becomes a game, where the point is NOT to speak the language with the best possible accent, but just to get past the Rosetta accent gateway. Also, so many of the sounds are just too basic. I learned nothing after hours of painful repetition. I know that I have at least a very decent accent, because of my past education and my travels in Latin America, but time and again, the software stopped me, until I just had to skip the lesson and once you start skipping lessons, the application has you re-doing earlier lessons, if you follow its internal logic.
After trying it for about three weeks, I just became too frustrating for me and I'm returning it. I'm also rather amazed at the plethora of good reviews this product has received. My experience cannot be unique and it makes me a little suspicious of the veracity of the other reviewers.

4 out of 5 stars So far going well   February 3, 2008

In lesson 1-9 and so far enjoying it. I find that I have to disengage my brain a little bit after the lessons to think back in English. I have found it helpful already not to read as the words are being spoken but close my eyes and then try to associate the phrase with the picture.

Also, before you purchase this, check with your local library. I am using this free right now with my library's online system.

1 out of 5 stars WIsh I could actually review the product but...   June 10, 2008

I'm sorry, but this isn't a review of their actual product. It's a tale of virus infected software and terrible customer service.

I purchased Latin American Spanish Levels 1, 2 and 3 from a Rosetta Stone Kiosk. When I loaded on the first level, my virus software (BitDefender) notified me that 7 of the content files were infected with the Exploit.SWF.Gen virus. Not a huge deal, but it quarantined the files so they couldn't be used. I sent an e-mail to their customer service asking if they had received any other compliants like this and what I should do. Their response? (after thier automated "thanks for your question, we'll get back with you as soon as possible") Nothing. Sent a follow-up e-mail. Nothing. Call me crazy, but when you spend $450 on a software package, a little customer service would be nice.

I'm in the process of returning the software. Can I return it to the Kiosk? Nope. Company policy. I have to mail their junk back, on my own dime. To rub salt on the wound, you have to jump through several hoops to return the software and have to listen to their unbearable customer service recording (over and over since it takes quite a bit of time to actually speak with a person) about how much Customer Satisfaction is important to them, how they understand how valuable my time is and how an easier way to contact them is through e-mail. Hah!
