Posting errors and abusive customer service! You are better off doing your taxes by hand than using this program March 30, 2007 Anonymous (Suburban Maryland) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I have used TaxCut fairly happily ever since it first came out, I think it was 1998. But after my experience this year, never again. When the program transferred my state tax payments to my state tax form, it posted one of the tax payments from my W-2s twice, making it look like I was going to get a refund, when actually I owed taxes. I just happened to catch the error, then had to spend about an hour manually reviewing my entire return to make sure they weren't pulling the extra payment from somewhere else. Then the program would not let me override the error. When I called customer service, they simply told me to override the problem. (They made no attempt to explain why the error occurred and were completely unconcerned that the program had figured my taxes wrongly.) When I told them the program would not permit me to override, a "manager" came on the line who told me, rudely, I was either stupid or lying. When I offered to email him a screenshot to verify the problem, he hung up on me. Fortunately, my state has an easy-to-use online program of its own to do simple returns directly on the web, so I just went there and completed my return. (The state's program, incidentally, verified that my manual posting was correct and TaxCut's was wrong.) In fairness, the customer service number was answered promptly, and, except for the rude manager, the agents were polite and really tried to help. But the bottom line is, what good is a tax program that posts the wrong numbers? If I hadn't caught this error, I would owe additional taxes and possibly a penalty when the state caught it. Next year it's TurboTax for me, and I'll do my state return directly online. But if you enjoy paying someone to figure your taxes wrongly, and then abuse you when you point it out to them, you may want to consider TaxCut.
Why is state importing always so poor?? February 12, 2007 Dianna M. Dineen (RockyHill, NJ) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I've used Taxcut a good 5 years now, having previously used TurboTax. It's not bad and gets the job done, but why has the exporting to state function still not gotten any better? I'm done with the federal and it's still asking me stupid questions during the state portion like, was I a full time resident of the state, did I pay income taxes to any other state and any property taxes, (yes, yes, yes, you have that already, etc. etc.) Sure it imported most of the data, but what gives? It makes me wonder what else it's missing or has gotten wrong.
This used to be a great program... What the hell happend? March 2, 2007 Angela R. Lanterman 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I purchased the premium addition online. I am a partial resident of CA and HI. After completing my Fed. and CA returns, I was prompted to purchase the HI state return for $24.95. I swear to God, on the second question it said, "This program does not support HI partial residents. You will have to fill out the form manually. Sorry for the incovenience." Are you freakin' kidding me?! Why the hell did they take my $25? Next I got to deal with a completely incompetent technical support staff. Three phone calls, two supervisors and over an hour later I got a refund. As if doing your taxes didn't cause enough aggravation on its own... The program also seemed to have some problems with income from my rental property and kept referring me to IRS instructions. Didn't I pay for the program to avoid having to look things up in the official publications? After using this program for so many years, literally without ever having a problem, I am shocked at how crappy my experience was this year. You better believe I'll be looking for a new program to use next year.
Had no choice March 6, 2007 Dr McCoy's babe (Sacramento, Ca USA) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I've used Turbo Tax for several and paper filed. I found it sufficient and would have bought it again this year but it no supports Windows 98 ! You can use thier online reporting for windows 98 but I really do not want all my tax filings including SSN#'s stored online in some companies data bank, thank you. SO, I bought HR Block Tax Cut which accomadates Windows 98. For basic filing its great and cheaper then Turbo anyway. I guess Turbo Tax thinks everyone has Windows 2000 now, not. I think they will lose some business because of non-support of W98, they lost mine.
Tax Cut Vs Turbo Tax March 13, 2007 N. Induni 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This was the first year I had used Tax Cut. Turbo Tax this year seemed too expensive so I decided to try Tax Cut. I could see no appreciable difference between the two. Both were easy to use and accurate. Tax Cut imported all my information from last years Turbo Tax so all in all, it seemed practical to me to save the 20 bucks.
