1 out of 5 stars I'm sick of product activation   January 19, 2008

As someone who has purchased a new copy of Money every single year since sometime in the mid or late 1990s, I was appalled this year to be notified by the software installer that I would need to activate the product within 60 days in order to keep using all of its features. Well, I won't be using it that long. I regret that I've now opened it and can't return it, so I'll just eat the $40 and go buy a copy of Quicken.

Product activation will probably be only a minor nuisance if you're only installing it on the one or two computers that you're allowed and you never reinstall your OS or upgrade your hardware substantially enough to trigger a reactivation. But if you buy a new computer and need to transfer it, or reinstall your OS every so often, or even have some sort of mishap, you'll have some extra steps to take. Again, it isn't that those steps are more than an extra 10-15 minute nuisance. For me, the problem is that I'm forced to take those extra steps because I, an HONEST customer who has fed plenty of money to Microsoft for many years, am paying for a handful of people who haven't bought the software who will still find a way around the activation and continue to pirate the software anyway. Way to go, Microsoft. You're not going to sell extra copies to those people, but now you've lost a paying customer as well.

There are viable alternatives to Money. I'm fed up with activation to the point where I'm considering the possibility that other activation-laden products I'm using might also have viable alternatives. As far as an OS, obviously I could buy a Mac whenever my current hardware becomes obsolete. The question is whether the software I need will have comparable alternatives. That will be my task for the next year, to answer this question. Money was the last straw for me.

While I'm complaining about this version, let me also point out that I was already dissatisfied with Microsoft's decision to discontinue the mobile version of Money. Before the 2007 release, Money had been bundled with a Windows Mobile / PocketPC software that could be used for capturing transactions while I'm out and about. This was immensely useful for reducing the time I spent coding things later, as I could do it as I go. Now without that, I've been getting behind on my data entry more often. My new Windows Mobile smartphone (a Motorola Q) currently has no solution for this. Anyway, ADIOS, Money.

I'm in the camp with those who had Money 2004 and decided to move up to be current. However, I could not USE Money Plus Deluxe (even though I bought it and agreed to the EULA) because there is a SECOND agreement stating explicitly that Microsoft will have the right to download and install updates at any time WITHOUT NOTIFYING the user. Click "decline" and the program instantly ends without any explanation. Having used the trial version, my data is no longer readable by the old version and the trial expired and was overlaid by the install of the full package. So I have no access to my data. Microsoft support just says that's the way it is. No option (except a refund) and no going back to an old version (they did warn about that part). In essence they have totally SCREWED me by not stating anywhere in advance that this agreement is required to even open the software, let alone ever see my years of accumulated data again.

They didn't tell us, so I am telling you: You must agree to allow Microsoft to update your software anytime without your consent and without even telling you that they are doing it. Must have something to do with the intrusive advertising others have mentioned. I find this to be an unacceptable abuse of power. But the fact that I cannot recover my data unless I agree..."Livid" is the word that comes to mind.

Let me close by saying I have barely tolerated Money's design these 3+ years. I have always found it shockingly counter-intuitive. I have never been pleased with this software; I only learned to reduce the frustration by using it as little as possible.

Update: If you buy this online from Microsoft and decide (as I did) to get a refund, don't call Microsoft. They will give you a toll-free number for Digital River. But don't call that one, either. If you want a refund, Digital River will give you a toll number (1 952 646 5047). Funny, you get the same menu, the same music as the toll-free number, but you have to wait twice as long on hold (15 min in my case). After that, they send an email so you can agree to one more thing: that you have deleted the product and all copies, etc. Well, that's fair enough but all the hoops and long-distance waiting on hold seem designed to make it as difficult as possible. Couldn't they have just sent a "refund URL" in the original email (the one saying they got your money)? Clicking the "refund URL" could have triggered the same email they sent me after I telephoned them. There was no other point to all the phone calls.

Oh, by the way, McAfee found a Trojan (downloader.gen.a) right after I downloaded the product. In the end, I found Money 2004 still works fine on Windows XP, so I am sticking with it (ugh).

This is a sad disappointment. I've "upgraded" every year for the last eight or so, and been dismayed to watch the array of new "features" diminish with each passing year. (There have even been some years when great features were discontinued!) They've finally wound this down to the point where there's NOTHING new worthwhile.
If you have the version of a prior year, stick with it.Money Plus Deluxe

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing installation attempts   October 28, 2007

Money Plus Deluxe

I've been a very satisfied Microsoft Money user since the product came out. I was previously using Money 2006, and I must say it worked pretty well for me. Today, temptation got the better of me, and I downloaded the 60-day product trial for Money Plus Deluxe. The installation seemed to go smoothly and I was prompted for a reboot of the computer. No big deal. But upon opening the program, my password for accessing my data would not work any longer. I could get it to work if I checked the "Sign into Money directly" box, although I then could not access my online accounts or update them. Money Plus was unable to recognize my internet connection.

Seven hours later, several internet searches, 16 reboots, a few reinstallations, and a chat session with a Microsoft tech support representative could not resolve the failure to recognize my internet connection. Trying to access help menus resulted in "Page cannot be displayed" windows. Apparently, this issue is a known problem, as it is in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. Anyway, I've put about as much time as I can and need to look for other options. I'm running a brand new HP m8120n Media Center PC with 3 gigs of RAM and 640 gigs of hard drive space with Vista Home Premium. Hopefully I can go back to Money 2006....

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good   August 31, 2007

I was forced to upgrade when Microsoft crippled my old 2004 version. Was prepared to hate it, especially considering all the other reviews. Even tried to switch to the competition but gave up because of impossible transfer of my 7 years worth of financial data.
To my surprise I found a sleek program that made the transition painless and clean. In the last 5 months I found that everything works better than before without a single problem.
Would have given it 5 stars but still cannot forgive them the way they forced me to do it...

If unsure, download a trial version and use it for a few months.

We'll be adding even more exciting features to assist you in the coming year.
