4 out of 5 stars An improvement over previous version   July 23, 2008

I should start by mentioning that I have never really liked McAfee's software. It has, in the past, tended to be bloatware, much like Norton's products: unnecessarily large (in terms of memory usage), too intrusive, etc.

This version might change my mind, though I would add that I am not planning on giving up my Kaspersky Internet Security Suite anytime soon- it's too good. Installation of McAfee VirusScan Plus went well, it installed quickly and cleanly. The software itself is generally intuitive and elegantly designed. Now I am not a virus lab, and did not run controlled tests to see how many viruses this software caught, but McAfee has generally had a good reputation in that department. The 24/7 live update of virus definitions is great, though I suspect this feature is or should be standard on all virus/security suites. I also like the ability to install this on 3 computers- many of us have more than one PC, and this makes sense.

Overall I recommend this antivirus as one of the best McAfee products in a while. Personally, I prefer the aforementioned Kaspersky software as an all-in-one solution (Firewall, Antivirus, Antispyware, etc), but for those looking for only a antivirus, give McAfee a whirl.

4 out of 5 stars easy to use (3.5 stars)   July 30, 2008

This is a decent program that will get the job done to protect your pc from the past and current viruses. It is extremely easy to use and install on your computer. Once on the computer the program will make sure to protect your computer, provide updates to new viruses and make sure you get your renewal notices in a timely fashion. This is a good competitor to other virus programs like nortons and pc-cillin.

3 out of 5 stars Makes log-in sluggish, but unobtrusive after that   August 9, 2008

I've been using McAfee VirusScan Plus for a month now, and I've noticed that it takes about thirty seconds longer to log in than before I installed it. My computer is about four years old so if you have a newer machine you may not experience this issue. McAfee doesn't use a huge amount of memory (much less than my web browser) and it hasn't had a noticeable effect on how fast programs run, so it's pretty good in that respect. I'm careful about which programs I install, and I use Firefox and keep it up to date, so McAfee hasn't detected any viruses or malware so far.

The online registration for this program was seamless. I have an old McAfee account from years ago that still existed, and this program was added to my old account without a hitch.

The user interface is frustrating. I downloaded a few files from the Internet and I wanted to scan only the new files, but selecting 'Scan' and then clicking 'Let me choose', which presumably lets you choose which files to scan, does not work at all. The dialog lets you select which folders to scan. I selected 'My Documents' and unchecked all the other folders, but after trying every combination of options I could not get it to stop scanning my whole computer. It wouldn't be so bad if the program didn't set the expectation that you can choose. It just seems insulting; if it says you can choose, it should let you choose.

Overall, I feel a little safer knowing that I have a program that may detect viruses that infect my computer, but it's no substitute for keeping my browser patched and my operating system up to date. If it's worth it to you to pay for the extra protection, and you don't mind a frustrating user interface, then I don't think you'll have a problem with McAfee.

5 out of 5 stars It works!   February 18, 2008

My experience with VirusScan Plus has been good so far. I had a little trouble installing it and had to contact online customer support, but the wait time was minimal (less than 9 minutes) and they were able to send me a link to uninstall McAfee and reinstall it. Now it's working like a charm. I tried CA and Norton and so far this one seems to work the best.

2 out of 5 stars After 4 months it is already requiring renewal   April 14, 2008

I thought when I purchased the product I would have at least a year. After 4 months the updating is suspended and I am told to renew whenever the computer comes up. I have disabled the wireless because it interferes with using the PC at internet cafes and my home network is protected. Therefore I get annoying messages about that as well as the spam blocker.

We'll be adding even more exciting features to assist you in the coming year.
