2 out of 5 stars S-L-O-W -- and beware auto-renewal   April 29, 2008

McAfee 2007 increased Windows XP boot-up time from 40 seconds to over 5 minutes, and it seems to constantly interfere with applications that have no reason to access the Internet -- even when no applications that do (email, browser) are open. If there is something it doesn't like, it doesn't say -- it has never reported a problem. Is there some reason a background application can't actually run in the background?

Because of its slow performance, I wasn't planning on renewing after a year. But after 11 months to the day, McAfee sent me an email message that they had automatically renewed my subscription. I checked all material I got with the downloaded installation package and found no reference to this arrangement; they certainly didn't advertise it at the time. (Don't let them have your credit card number!) It took only about 15 minutes on the telephone with someone with an Indian accent to cancel, though, so this situation could have been worse.

4 out of 5 stars McAfee VirusScan Plus 2008 - (3 User version)   June 24, 2008

When it comes to buy and using Virus Protection software, who doesn't want the best product for the money spent? The hardest part of buying the software is being able to figure out just which product that is. There are many, many programs out there that offer Virus Protection and many now include protection against harmful spyware and malware.

That said, I am far from an expert on the subject. I am your average computer user. I surf the net and I play online video games which means I am frequently exposed to viruses, spyware, malware and hackers. I have had a lot of harmful junk on my computer and experienced the panic that comes from simply not knowing how to get rid of the problems. So naturally when it comes to getting virus protection I want a program that I don't need to read an instruction manual to use.

I grew up using Norton products and had very few issues with them, but when I purchased a new computer it came with McAfee software so I began using it instead. I was a little iffy at first because the two are very different. I recently renewed my subscription to this product and have been very happy with it. Why? Because it doesn't bother me all the time!

It's protection that needs very little attention to keep it running. It's always protecting your system like a watch-dog and it has an automatic update function which is essential for the best protection. I was able to set-up a scheduled weekly scan to check for any viruses and it runs in the background so most of the time I don't even notice it's there. For me that's very important because I spend several hours a day on my computer. I do notice, however, that if I am playing a video game or using a media player program at the same time as a net browser that sometimes it slows them down or causes lag issues.

Since using this product I have had no problems with viruses on my computer, it's caught them and disposed of them with ease. I have, however, had problems with Spyware and Malware despite the promises to block them. A recent malware issue resulted in two days of researching the problem before being able to resolve it because McAfee did not recognize it was a problem program and wouldn't help me get rid of it. To supplement the Spyware protection provided in this software package I chose to download a couple of 'free-ware' programs (Spyware Blaster & Spy-boy Search & Destroy) that I used before with Norton and have had very few problems since. If you are suffer from frequent spyware issues I hate to say it but this software just isn't enough protection. You will likely want to find supplemental programs as extra protection or upgrade to a fancier version of this software.

So do I recommend this program? Sure. For the money it is a very good basic Virus Protection package and the added Spyware and hacker protection are a bonus. This is, however, a very basic program. I think it's best for those who do not visit many sites or play online games that put them in danger of any really scary stuff. If you have teenagers or kids (like I do) you may want to go with one of the fancier McAfee programs that has more features that provide deeper protection. I don't know about anyone else's kids but mine have a tendency to visit flash games sites and they always end up with weird Trojans and Worms being caught by this program and then I have to sit down and clear spyware from the computer. Who has time for that?

Best of luck choosing the right product for you and your computer! I definitely have been sold on my good experience transitioning from one big name in the Anti-virus software business to this one.

5 out of 5 stars Better than Norton 360, Hands Down   July 7, 2008

Still I did experience a bit of a slowdown, but nothing like with 360. I'm running Vista and I think that's part of it. I'm considering a downgrade. Actually, I'm going to. XP, worked great for me. Vista iCandy, no good, at least not for me.

That being said, this programs seems to do everything it's supposed to do. I've been using it for over a month now and have experienced no problems. It stays in the background and does what it's supposed to do without getting in the way and that's about the highest praise a program like this can get.

4 out of 5 stars Easy +3   July 17, 2008

A very easy to install and manage anti-virus application. McAfee has long been passed off as a "wanna-be" anti-virus software, and has slowly been making its way up to the top. With the release of the new VirusScan Plus, its making itself a real contender in the tight competition out there.

Although it lacks some of the more complex features of the more traditional business protection solutions, it stands out in simplicity of use, updating and protection from hackers, viruses, spyware and safe internet surfing with the included SiteAdvisor software -- all of which is perfect for the casual at-home internet user.

This installation was quite simple; taking about 10 minutes, and gives you the option to install from the CD or downloading the latest from online. Depending on your download speed, I would recommend installing from the CD and then updating later from the main McAfee control panel. Updates were a cinch, and protection was automatically turned on by default. Another great feature to note -- which seems to be more common as of late -- is the ability to install the protection on up to three computers.

Overall, McAfee has done a great job with its latest release, and if you need a simple solution to your internet woes, without killing your PC's performance, and native support for Windows Vista, then look no further.

I have been using Norton on all my machines, however am open to change. The software was easy to install and seems to move quickly on my machine.
It certainly does perform as advertised thusfar, and doesn't seem to slow my machine down. I am using it with Vista. You just can't be without antivirus protection these days, and for the money(even full price), this is a nice product.

We'll be adding even more exciting features to assist you in the coming year.
