2 out of 5 stars Say Hello to the endless reboot   November 27, 2007

Just got a new high powered Dell Laptop (Windows Vista, plenty of RAM and a huge hard drive, etc...lucky me!) The PC-cillian program came pre-installed with a free 90 day trial period for the virus updates. I have always used Norton in the past but decided to give this project a try. Trend Micro claims their product is superior to Norton Internet Security because it updates the virus definitions daily (more like hourly). Norton does it once a week - which should suffice for most of us not involved in the CIA or FBI! Well, every single time I rebooted my computer, or turned it on, PC-cillian would pop-up and download the latest virus definitions. Then it would tell you to reboot the computer. After rebooting the computer, it would again pop-up again, download the up-to-the-second virus definitions...and ask you to reboot your computer. Again. And again...and again. It is the endless reboot with this product and it is never satisfied with its virus definitions. Reboot. Reboot. Reboot. I even set the program to only update every 48 hours, which it ignored and continued to try to update virus definitions each second of each day...all with a reboot...reboot...reboot. The product seems incapable of loading this information in current memory. After two days I ordered Norton Internet Security 2008 and uninstalled the PC-cillian product. Norton promptly updated itself once, no reboot, and settled quietly down in my task bar proclaiming all was well with the world. It has not asked me to reboot my computer once (after the inital installation). I think most people who have problems with Norton use their 'internet security SUITE' which is a massive set of programs that will slowdown your computer because it does too much. The Norton Internet Security 2008 product (not the 'suite') offers a wide range of awesome programs that have worked seemlessly with my new Vista system - and no more reboots! We'll see how it goes, but the PC-cillian product was ridiculous and I don't recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars 2008 is a bad build, other scanners are more stable   December 20, 2007

After installing TrendMicro's Internet Security 2008 version, I relaized it was unable to complete a scan. Support advised me to uninstall it and then re-install.

Following the re-install, the same behavior was observed, except now, at certain times, it is causing video corruption. After running a scan or opening TrendMicro 2008, some windows fail to draw themselves on the screen properly (especially the case with Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Outlook, Yahoo Messenger and MSN Messenger). Additionally, after bringing the laptop out of sleep mode, the entire desktop is corrupted.

What scans I can complete, from competing vendors, tell me that my pc is clean. Housecall, the free online scan from TrendMicro also deems my PC is clean. With this in mind, I do believe that I have voluntarily contracted a new form of virus, one that I will refer to as "Win32.TrendMicro.2008"

Solution: I discovered shutting down TrendMicro 2008 resolved the display issues. After restarting TrendMicro 2008, in a few minutes to a few hours, the display problems return.

I will be going back to AVG following this experience. Furthermore, I recommend to anyone wishing to try this software or any other to check with the vendor first in order to determine whether or not previews of a particurlar product are available so that you can "try before you buy."

1 out of 5 stars Another one star security software   December 30, 2007

(this was the trial software)

Junk. Two machines with a usb, "MY BOOK" hard drive on one. The other computer could no longer access this drive. I tried changing network/firewall seetings ( confusing) and even disabled the program on both machines. No help until uninstalling the program off of both. My network printer worked....wow.

Would not even consider calling tech support. Life is too short.

Flawed software...again.

After removing this p.o.s., I still had problems. I thought I was too hasty in my review. NOT. I restored, rolled back, XP to pre-trend micro install , and volia, it solved the problem.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY ONLINE THRU DIGITAL RIVER!!!!   October 10, 2007

Made the mistake of renewing and buying 3 PC license deal from Trend through Digital River on line. They not only overcharged me, but did not get my new expiration date correct (6 months?!) and refused to reply to my many emails. Never did get the 3 PC license, either.

Buy hard copy only!

1 out of 5 stars Problems with Trend Micro 2008   January 2, 2008

I have used Trend Micro's product before without any problems. This time, the product has severe problems. The firewall won't come up at all, the automatic update won't function at all and, try as they may, Trend Micro's support has not been able to come up with a solution for the problem. I finally gave up and installed McAfee which, in the same environment, had no problems. I am running WinXPHomeSp2. I like Trend's product so I am very disappointed with this version.
