Contractor Review November 25, 2005 Paul A. Brunner (San Francisco, CA) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
I run an electrical contracting business and have owned this tool for 1 year. Between myself and my workers we use these tools every day and have a good chance to see which models work best. And, we totally abuse them - from drilling in heavy studs/beams to setting screws and bolts for solar panels (sometimes the occasional nail gets pounded in with the drill base!). What I like: - Great torque, can really chug along while drilling through heavy material - Heavy, but rugged. Can take the abuse of being dropped and kicked around - Forward/reverse button easy to manipulate What I don't like: - The two speeds (1 & 2) don't always engage. I have to switch back and forth to make them engage (half the time). - I would like to see a higher over-ride position, 16 is highest, but wimpy - Battery life could be improved. Otherwise, buy an additional battery and stay on top of recharging them Overall, great value for the $$. I would love it if Makita added a hammer drill option to this model. One of my workers has the DeWalt 18V hammer drill which works quite well, but has less torque and battery life than the Makita.
Excellent product, durable and well-priced March 14, 2007 Nick Ustaszewski (New Jersey) 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
As a trade professional, I use this drill more often and harder than most. I own, or have owned, Craftsman Professional 18v, Bosch 18v and DeWalt 18v drills. They're all in my truck, but I find myself always reaching for the Makita, as I find it the most comfortable to use and as powerful and long running as the considerably more expensive Bosch and DeWalt. The drill's clutch is top-notch for driving, but not overdriving, screws. The NiMH 2.6A batteries have a great run time and even the case is relatively compact and well made. This is my second purchase of this Makita drill, and frankly, as the other drills( which I hardly use except when I need two or more drills at the same time) die, I'll be switching over to all Makitas. That will also give me the advantage of being able to interchange batteries between drills. You can't go wrong with this drill, and for you homeowners, it should last many, many years.
Almost perfect. October 25, 2004 Jason Hoyt 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
In truth, I would give this beautifully performing unit a 4.5 stars. But since the choice was between 4 or 5 stars, I figured 5 would be closer to the truth. I have used this unit daily for over a year with no problems whatsoever. It's charge lasts a long time under a good deal of abuse (drilling through metal etc). It's metal gears are very durable. The power is very good as well. I wish it did have 450lbs of torque, though. Our 14.4 volt Dewalt has a little more power. But it's not as durable. So a tradeoff I guess. I would take my Makita over the Dewalt though.
A small bundle of power August 21, 2003 Winston Wong (Eldersburg, MD USA) 10 out of 47 found this review helpful
I purchased this drill a couple of months ago and found it a pleasure to use. While I looks to be a similar size as other cordless drills, this drill is so well balanced that it does not feel big. The torque is great giving the power to drive long screws when needed, but sensitive enough to not strip out the heads. If I could, I would buy another to have a drill for both hands, but one is enough.
Dissapointed October 31, 2003 Jason Smith 9 out of 17 found this review helpful
Transmission broke after three months of use. Had to buy a Porter Cable while I wait three business days for mine to be repaired. Being a diehard Makita guy I should have learned by now that while their saws and such are great, the drills still need alot of work. Too expensive for homeowner use, and kinda weak to rely on for the professional.
