This is exactly what I was looking for. You simply plug it into the wall and plug any device into it. Push the wattage button, and Viola!, it shows you the power consumption down to the tenth of a watt.
It also will show you the voltage and amperage and can show the power consumption over time. But just measuring the wattage that all the gazillion electronic device in your house use is really an eye-opener.
It is completely safe.
For ease of use, I plugged it into a 6 foot extension cord. This makes it easier to read the LCD display (which is quite large).
