Better than gas! June 20, 2007 Paul Z (Philadelphia area) 18 out of 18 found this review helpful
Having used an electric and two gas units over ten years, I liked the power of gas but hated the unreliability of gas motors. Both gas units lasted a year or two before failing. The old electric lasted but gradually, the interchangeable parts broke down with heavy use. I replaced the plastic blade once. After doing it once, I decided I would replace the unit rather than go thru that ordeal again. Saw claim on box that Toro Ultra vac "more powerful than Gas". Decided to try it. Somewhat confused by "Toro Supervac" model making same claim, but decided to get more expensive since price difference was small. As a Blower: While I had bought gas units for the power (gas engines are more powerful than electrics), I was surprised by the claim of this unit to be more powerful. Having used it, it is an extremely powerful blower. Handle location and ergonomics perfect for use as a blower. Would prefer if there were a better connector for electrical cord, but otherwise perfect. Has continuous variable speed control which is a welcome feature for gravel driveway where want to reduce power to avoid blowing gravel around. As a vac: powerful, very resistant to clogging. Between pine cones and twigs this was a real problem for my prior units. Suction tube is quite long making it awkward to handle for a shorter person. Metal chopping blade is aluminum. I would have preferred steel for durability, but hopefully this will be better than the plastic usually used. From initial usage, it chops much better making it more clog resistant, but, I am already seeing knocks on the blade. To be fair, pine cones are rough on all vacs. Given the large number of them in my yard hidden among the large oak leaves, they are tough to avoid completely. Leaves are chopped pretty good, but not exceptionally as Toro claims. Changing between blower and vac Well thought out. Tough to get wrong and does not require tools as my old electric did. I switch back and forth a lot. That was primary reason for old electric unit part wear failure. This one switches much easier.
Tora Ultra: More than satisfied. October 21, 2007 T. Schindler (Wausau, WI) 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
Having used a Toro blower before, I was not concerned about its ability to move leaves. What I wasn't sure about was the mulcher. For our acre lot with some 20 or more 100-year-old maples, it was either the mulcher worked or I would be spending a lot more on a garden tractor with a bag unit. Fortunately, the Toro mulcher has more than met my expectations. I blow the leaves into rows for mulching and fill the 13 gal. bag in two to three minutes. I get four bags in each of two 32 gal. plastic garbage cans that are hauled off to a compost pile. I've been forced by weather to do wet leaves but it is far better to do them dry. $65 vs. $2,000; now that's a very satisfying no-brainer!
Toro Ultra 12 Amp Electric Blower/Vacuum #51599 October 17, 2007 Doug (Rocklin, CA USA) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I purchased this model of Toro Blower/Vacuum to replace an earlier Toro model. I like the upgraded design of the Mod. #51599 for the additional power and means of controlling the motor speed. The ease of changing over from blower to vacuum is a great improvement. I would rank this electric model in the superior category.
Lightweight, all around great blower July 7, 2007 Monique S. (Nesconset, NY) 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
Ordered this for my husband after his old gas blower blew its last. I did my research and figured it was time to go electric even though I thought the cord might pose a nuisance. I'm glad I bought it regardless, because he loves this Toro! The fact that it's lightweight and VERY QUIET outweighs any cord issue. He even used it up on the roof to get rid of the accumulated Springtime sheddings from our Oak tree. I can't say how well (or badly) the vacuum part of this machine performs because we haven't tried that out yet. Bottom line, this is one purchase I do not regret, plus the price was unbeatable anywhere else, to boot!
