Great tool that is easy to carry. February 15, 2008 Slade 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is a well designed tool. It's nice to have a "full size" tool that is as light and easy to carry as this. I have a Victorinox Swiss Tool that I love, but it is heavy and requires a sheath and belt (to mount sheath) to wear it comfortably. With the Skeletool, I can just clip it on a belt loop using the carabiner or use the detachable belt clip. I don't know all of blade metal types, but the blade on the Skeletool is very sharp and appears to hold its edge well. It is nice that it can be opened one handed like a regular pocket knife as well. The screwdriver bits are nice and the design allows for a solid, comfotable grip when using it as a screwdriver. The phillips style tips seem to narrow to work, but I have found that they do grip the screw head and work fine. The bottle opener is great. Not only does it work well, but with the springed clip of the carabiner located where it is, it actually holds on to the bottle cap when you remove it. One note of warning, and thus the 4 start review. It is very easy to pinch the underside of your fingers if not careful with the pliers. I write this review with a significant blood-blister after having the grip of the pliers slip while I was applying force and got pinched. I love having a multi-tool that covers the basics as well as this one that I can carry around with me so easily.
This is from Leatherman? June 4, 2008 Frank (Chicago, IL USA) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I own several multitools from Leatherman - Juice, Surge, Wave and New Wave. When the Skeletool came out I made it on my "must-have gadget" list right away. Last weekend at a BBQ I had a look at my brother in-law's Skeletool - at that time he had it for less than a week. My first reaction was: THIS is from Leatherman?? The facts: Pros - All the essential tools are there, it's light and the bit-holder has a quick-release now. The cons - Ergonomics are very poor. I have normal-sized hands and it feels very uncomfortable to use. Manufacturing quality ist very low compared to earlier models: The blade has considerable slack and feels very wobbly. When you try to close it the edge of the blade scratches along some other metal piece. It will go dull in no time. The design! I work in product development - design is not about one guy's personal taste. This product is hurting Leatherman's market position big time: NO Leatherman "DNA" whatsoever. I gave the product a 2-star rating, assuming that the loose blade was a production issue and not a design flaw - otherwise it would be 1 star. My advice: Stick with classic models or, if you need a small form factor, go with a Juice model.
This is one solid little tool May 15, 2008 DW (Earth) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I rated this one star better than the Skeletool CX because of the cost and how it was advertised. Pluses : It feels solid, built in carabiner clip, spare bit holder. Blade can be extracted by one hand. Size. Screw driver is really easy to use, not just an after thought tool. Ease of use !!! It looks different,. Detractions: Only a few tools (but for the weight it's good). Interchangeable bits are proprietary, so you have to get them from Leatherman. Cost per feature is high. In short, the tool is light enough to carry all day and even clip onto a set of key. If you are Victorinox fan, this plier tool would be a good addition to carry as it's screw driver works better for large screws, the blade is better for tough jobs, and the pliers are larger. But it won't replace the versatility of a good Swiss Army Knife. Lastly, pick up the extra bits Leatherman 934870 42 Bit Assortment with Nylon Sheath . It's well worth to extend the tools usefulness. If you debating between the Skeletool Leatherman 830846 Skeletool Multitool and the Skeletool CX Leatherman 830850 Skeletool CX Multitool, know that the strip of carbon fiber is just that, one a tiny strip that looks to be more of a bit of accenting than something that improves the weight. With the Skeletool CX you are paying a premium for a darker color (but not the blade or core mettle) and a bit of composite material. Also note that the 5oz weight is listed for both knives, so the CX isn't so much lighter to make it a noted feature.

First impression: the Skeletool has a sleek look with a solid yet light feel. Impression after trying a one-handed blade release: ouch. Opening and closing the pliers and knife blade was difficult and did not get easier until I added a little 3-in-1 oil to the joints and worked it in. After 20 cycles it opened fine even with a thumb-flick. The clip is a nice addition that allows the tool to fit comfortably in a front jean pocket until needed. I like the bottle opener but haven't used it yet since I drink mostly from cans or plastic bottles with screw caps. Overall it is a useful tool that allows quick and easy access to its features.
Best Leatherman Yet February 20, 2008 Vince A. Jensen (Reno, NV) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Great tool. First and foremost is the weight. 5oz. As far as weight is concerned, the cutout's on the frame saves a lot, but so does the construction of the metallic pieces. Rather than one solid piece, the skelitool uses thin layering pieces. This cuts off both weight as well as adding strength. However, I would have liked to have seen the pieces to have been fully removable. They easily could have been with the use of screws (as in whats used to remove the belt clip) rather than rivets. Next is the carabeaner clip. Placed towards the bottom, the weight of the tool is centered towards the top, so...if... the tool were to be cliped to something such as a daisy chain, the tool would tend to sway a lot more. If the clip were integrated into the top half of the folded tool, it would greatly relieviate the sway. This however, is the least of the flaws I could find in this GREAT tool. Finally is the blade. Most leatherman's seem to be quite flimsey. Pull out your current leatherman and try it out. The blade on the skeletool has been beefed up quit a bit, and you will find , essentially, no degee of bend. Overall I would like to have seen a few things done differentley, but overall, this is a great tool.
