5 out of 5 stars Getting there...slowly   May 30, 2006

So - the CD soundtrack to this wonderful movie has finally been released. Don't delay, FSM are only producing a few copies of it (and I have one of them!). FSM are to be congratulated on a beautifully produced set of three CDs. Pure magic!

But what about the movie? How many Amazonians have got to write 5-star reviews before the people at MGM, Warner, Turner...or whoever it is...get the message? This film has been the subject of a vitriolic and totally undeserved onslaught from the critics from when it opened. It is, in fact, a beautifully crafted story with performances you only dream about; a tremendous score, breathtakingly arranged and conducted by John Williams and a visually compelling movie.

For goodness sake, get on with it.

We need a decent DVD taken from a restored print. No cuts (we fans know how you have hacked it about in the past) - and please include the overture, entr'acte and exit music. And, while you're about it, a properly restored 70mm theatrical release print...lots of them, please (I live in the UK and am fed up of getting cast offs from the USA).

5 out of 5 stars Overlooked ignored masterpiece on DVD at last .   June 23, 2004

How many people have waited too long to see this movie released on DVD??? Many people if you look through the pages of requests for this film. Yet when it is FINALLY announced it is coming to DVD, why do Amazon get someone called Marshall Fine (who is Marshall Fine) to write a negative review of it??????????
Can Amazon give us more details?? Will it be the completely restored print with all the overtures, entractes etc, plus what about the lost material so alluded to in the excellent CD of a few years ago?

Goodbye Mr Chips (1969) always has and always will be one of my all time favourite movies. I have directed three stage versions over the years with young actors based on Terrence Rattigan's brilliant, witty, theatrical script. I am always amazed the film was not well received in its initial release. When it was released in Australia in 1970, it was a smash hit, yet its failure in the States forced distributors to pull it out of theatres and slash 30 minutes out of it. There were so many various cut versions I have seen over the years. Thankfully it was released on VHS about fifteen years ago and was restored to its original length (well almost, the song "When I Was Younger" has always been cut from the film altho on the soundtrack). On DVD it will find a whole new audience. I watched it again recently and was amazed at how fresh and charming it is, its one of those rare movies that never date. A movie desperately needing to be re-evaluated by critics again. Also, the music is wonderful, why do people criticise Bricusse. His style is so subtle, hummable? What does that mean> These are gentle, tender love songs with a couple of theatrical showstoppers.... O Toole and Petula Clarke were never better. My one criticism of the VHS is that it is a little misty (and I dont mean in the sequences that are supposed to have that effect) and not very sharp and clear. It needs to be restored to its original 70MM brilliance. It is good to note the film has been given a wonderful CD release over 3 discs with multiple photos. Let us hope when the movie is released in January it is afforded the same treatment.

5 out of 5 stars Ignore The Critics!!!   May 18, 2003

I just purchased the tape of this film and watched it after not having seen it for several years. I love it as much today as I did when I saw it in the theater many years ago. Peter O'Toole is a revelation as Mr. Chipping. Petula Clark, IMHO, never got enough recognition for her absolutely luminous performance as Katherine. The cinematography makes the film exquisite to look at. I love the music -- especially the song "You and I." I never fail to cry at the end.
This movie will leave you feeling especially loving towards your significant other!!!

One of the finest films ever produced with outstanding music. I have other editions of this story, but none reach the standards of this masterpiece. I look forward to a release of this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Where's the DVD?   January 29, 2007

The Herb Ross GOODBYE,MR.CHIPS is one of my all time favorite films. I saw it first as the Christmas show at the Empire Theater, London in 1969, and have seen it over and over again, first in a barely watchable pan and scan VHS version, and then on a somewhat better widescreen laserdisc. But where is the long promised DVD release? With all the garbage that does make it to DVD, I am at a loss to know why a film as well made and touching as this has not yet been released. Maybe Peter O'Toole's Academy Award nomination for VENUS will make someone at Warner Home Video, (who I believe release older MGM films), sit up and take notice and get the CHIPS DVD into the works. With terrific performances by O'Toole, Petula Clark, Michael Redgrave and the amazing Sian Phillips along with fine songs by Leslie Bricusse and seamless direction by Herb Ross, one can only hope.
