ROBERT WISE IN CONTROL February 23, 2004 JohnK (NY,USA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
People should know that despite the comparable lack of name recognition director Robert Wise in responsible for landmark films like WEST SIDE STORY, THE HAUNTING,THE SOUND OF MUSIC,THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL and THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN as well as many popular movies most people count among their favorites. An aspect common to all of the above is the the palpable presence of a serious, absorbed and controling presenter. Wise films are serious business. There is nothing gratuitous or trivial in his work. One gets the feeling he is watching over we who watch him as he guides us through a story and his fatherly fingerprints are all over ANDROMEDA STRAIN. The science is believable and the effects frighteningly blunt. Entombed with the films desperate characters as they struggle blindly to solve the the impending disaster we are subjected to sterile matter of fact views and emotionless cuts to their unraveling efforts that will wipe us all out - or not. It's as if Wise were saying, "Things like this could happen and they could happen like this and all you could do about it would be to sit and watch." Rarely are science fiction themes supported by such restraint. Young viewers may be lost without the action factor but anyone who likes intelegent thrillers will not be disapointed. Robert Wise's movies are for mature audiences of all ages.
A Movie or Documentry? January 24, 2005 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
It all starts as a normal launch for a military satellite whose code name is SCOOP. Then the unthinkable of happens. A small meteor hits the satellite causing it to alter course and land in a populated area. A biological threat is released and kills the whole town of Piedmont. Only one man, Dr. Jeremy Stone thought this day would come. Dr. Stone convinced the government to build a top secret facility for handling this kind of situation. The call is made that there is a "fire", which is the top secrete term to mobilize the team. One by one the team is called in, including Dr. Jeremy Stone, Dr. Mark Hall, Dr. Ruth Levitt, Dr. Charles Barton. This was the team (excluding one member who was "sick" and could not make it). The team then all came from their separate ways. First Burton and Stone explored the town of Piedmont. They recover two people a baby and a man named Jackson who somehow managed to survive in the hot zone. They also find some people who did not die instantly but instead slowly went insane. The team arrives at the Wildfire facility. This is the facility that the government made. It is armed with an atomic self destruction device. Will the threat spread; will the team solve the puzzle? This movie kept almost everything the same. Some things were taken out but not much. The basic plot is the same. The book was used as the script in some parts like when the team was first coming in to wildfire and they had to get permission to go in. Also the building in which the team worked was the same. There were some differences; the director changed the first name of Dr. Levit from Peter to Ruth. Also the director changed the number of minutes until the bomb goes off from 3 to 5 minutes. Also in the book Mr. Jackson is not cooperative but in the movie he is. Overall the book was good because of the suspense and how Michael Crichton did it like a documentary. But that suspense was not apparent in the movie it seemed a little bit too much like a documentary. The movie gets 3 out of 5 stars.
classic early seventies sci-fi thriller!! February 15, 2006 Frances (usa) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
The first several minutes of the movie, when the deadly "space germ" is first encountered, are still some of the most taut and frightening ever filmed.
No Action - Try thinking September 23, 2006 R. Stewart (Florida, USA) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I saw this movie at the theatre when it was first released. As an avid science fiction reader, I was interested in seeing the movie. As a biologist, I found the movie very interesting. I was watching the scene at the beginning of the movie when they go to retrieve the satellite. I realized my chest hurt. From suspense of the movie I realized I had been holding my breath. Yes, it is slow paced movie . But so is scientific research. The movie presents a good balance of science, suspense, and action. Try Thinking - is for the questions. Obviously they were not pay attention to the movie. 1. the satellite while in orbit was struck by a meteorite that had the organism embedded in it. 2. the hypothesis was the organism had adapted to living in space. 3. All bacterium produce exponentailly 1>2>4>8--this is exponential progession(which is why when the man wanted his reward from the king in a grain of wheat double for each square on a chess board the king realized he could not pay it). 4. It takes only one change in dna or rna to produce a mutation. That mutated cell will then reproduce. Reproductive structure of the organism was very simple so minor changes could produce a colony rapidly 5. Decontamination was to minimized introduction of terrestial virus and bacterium that might use by the unknown contagion. Just as virus can hide or use a cell as host(be it singel celled or multicellular) but not be active to produce symptoms. Most of this is biology at the high school level now. It is getting to technically. Rarely will a movie equal a book. This was and still is a good movie.
Project Wildfire.....!!!!!! December 21, 2006 Tara Handford (Sudbury, Ontario Canada) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Okay this was pretty good for something from author Micheal Chrichton. The story does have a lot of suspense to it. A town is wiped out by a unknown virus. The Army brings in a team of four scientists to a top secret location, to tried and figure out what caused the virus and find a cure fast. Before it can infect anyone else or before the government makes a mistake. By ordering an airstrike to wipe out the town and the secret location. But the only clues, the scientists have to solve this mystery are a strange container from a space satellite, an old man and a baby.
