Another Kenpo Practioner's Opinion November 16, 2005 M. B. Ingersoll (Fort Worth, TX, USA) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Background: I'm a former member of the IKKA and AKKI. Short and dirty, if you wanna know something about American Kenpo and see it accurately demonstrated - GET THIS MOVIE! Mr. Speakman was (if *I* remember correctly) a Fourth Degree Black Belt in the IKKA at the time this movie was made. The movie is, on the surface, a martial arts action film. But VERY close to that surface is the story of one boy's/man's journey in the ART of American Kenpo. Although it's not protrayed specifically as an American art, this IS Senior Grandmaster Edmund K. Parker's American Kenpo. Mr. Speakman and my instructor, Mr. Keith Gorham, both studied under Mr. Parker. Mr. Gorham recommended this film to us, his students. The Kenpo IS real - not enhanced. A proficient Kenpo practioner at Mr. Speakman's level CAN and will perform at the speeds you'll see in the film. I gave it four stars because it doesn't have "five-star" acting, but as a realistic martial arts film, it's VERY hard to beat. It clearly depicts the spirit of Ed Parker's Kenpo and, despite a few off-color words, I urged my own children to watch it when they were old enough. As someone else said, I REALLY WISH this film was available on DVD. My VHS version is wearing out!
Excellent May 18, 2002 MCC (East Helena, MT United States) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
As a second degree purple belt Kenpoist, I too have watched many martial arts movies. I like this movie because it is more realistic, and I recognize the techniques Jeff Speakman uses. I especially like watching him perform his kata at the beginning of the movie, and the dedication to Ed Parker at the end of the movie. Anyone who studies Kenpo Karate will enjoy this flick. I would like to see it come out on DVD though.
Awesome! October 2, 2001 P. J Parrish (Columbus Ohio) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I thought that this movie pulls no punches when it comes to bringing killers to justice. I like this better then the Jackie Chan action films. When "Kim" is murdered by Someone in Koreatown, Jeff decides to go after his killer. The action sequences were outstanding! The scene in the bar was a no holds barred kind of a fight. The only problem is the tense relationship with his father. I only wish that there was a scene where Jeff and his father could have made their peace with the past. I would show this to any action fan that is tired of Jackie Chan. I like this film because it has a powerful edge to it.. One of my all time favorite action films of the last decade... Jeff Speakman is the ULTIMATE ACTION HERO....
Great action! May 3, 2004 Eric S. Illikianin (Cross Lanes, WV United States) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is Jeff Speakman's best movie and it stands up there with other great Martial Arts movies. Speakman's kenpo is very realistic in this movie. An action fan could not ask for more than this movie delivers! But why is this great movie not on DVD yet?!?
Review By A Kenpoist October 20, 2005 S. A. Musselwhite (SC USA) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Wow. This movie is incredible. Unlike most martial arts movies, this one has real combat and techniques taken from Ed Parker's American Kenpo system. The plot is also pretty good, which is getting rarer and rarer. Having studied EPAK for a few years, I was really glad to see this movie because, as I said, it is real. Speakman's opening form is pretty good too, but part of me wishes that instead it showed him doing either Long Form 4 or 7. Regardless, if you have a VHS player then buy this movie. It will not be a waste of money.
