simply one of the best movies ever.ted moniz, san jose February 9, 2003 Theodore B. Moniz (san jose,ca) 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
i also watched the remake of this movie being a big tom selleck fan.i was dissapointed.lee marvin and jack palance had a great chemistry that is rarely seen in most movies past or present.this is truly one of if not the best but unfortunatly one of the most forgotten films about the old west.Iwould not hesitate to recomend this film to anyone, and that everyone should see this film at least once for it is a real treasure and probably one of lee marvins finest roles along with cat ballou, maybe better. also the john barry score had a very familiar sound, similar to dances with wolves which was written many years later by that very composer.this film needs to be restored on to dvd.i would add this to my collection in a heartbeat.maybe some day. just a great film.
Monte Walsh November 20, 2003 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
This is one of the most underated westerns ever made and it never seems to get the attention and respect it deserves. Whenever I see most of the "must see" lists, this movie rarely gets any mention and yet when I saw it, I immediately ranked it among my all time favorites. This movie will move you and stay in your memory as will the theme song. This is my first review ever on Amazon and I felt it needed to be done to give this truly great movie some much deserved attention.
Second Rate VHS January 18, 2002 Milton D. Baird (Prineville, Oregon United States) 7 out of 11 found this review helpful
The tape I received was a disappointment. The movie, Monte Walsh was shot in Panivision and I assumed would be done so on the tape. Not true. The tape is blurry and the sound seems to have been restained. I taped this movie sometime ago from TV and after viewing the "New Tape" found the tape I recorded much better. In the introduction for instance I can read Momma Cass in full. On the new tape one of the s's is left off. The technical info from Amazon or Inetvideo is non-existent. What gives?
My Favorite January 19, 2003 Linda Carroll (Vale, OR United States) 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
This has been my favorite movie for years. So of course when I heard they were going to do a remake I had to watch. Lee Marvin got my vote for the better. There was just no comparison. And I'm a Tom Selleck fan. The whole movie with Marvin was just more realistic, from their dress to the buildings, their saddles and don't forget the music. Mama Cass's song couldn't have been more fitting. It left me thinking about the characters and their life, the new one didn't so much. Even the feelings between Marteen and Monte were done better in Lee Marvin's movie. So if you want a good western, true to the times, this is it.
Lee Marvin's best movie role who deserved an OSCAR. July 5, 2004 IR Jones (Mississippi, USA) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
The previous reviews couldn't have said it better. I will add that this movie has the best bronco bustin' ride ever in the movies. I saw the Tom Selleck version. Not good enough. It's like trying to remake Gone With The Wind.
