Our favorite comedy August 23, 1999 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
We saw this film on a film series, and loved it so much we came home and ordered it. It is our favorite Benigni comedy ("Life is Beautiful" is in its own unique class) because not only is it relentlessly hilarious, it is somehow adorable and heartwarming as well.We have been sharing it with all of our friends, making it sort of our family film.
A rare accomplishment -- a funny comedy! September 3, 2000 Nathan Southern (Santa Monica, CA) 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
Maybe the funniest film I've ever seen in my life. This one tops them all -- "Kentucky Fried Movie," "Ishtar," "The Tall Guy" -- you name it. Benigni proves, once again, why he is a comedic genius with this tale of mistaken identity. He plays a bumbling con artist who manages to weasel his way through life without paying for *anything.* After a mishap involving a nymphomaniac and a chainsaw, the cops mistake him for a serial murderer/rapist. As in "Johnny Stecchino," Benigni's gags are wildly inventive. The humor here is some of the raunchiest in memory, though interestingly, it never once becomes offensive. I laughed so hard at this movie that I actually found it impossible to watch the entire film in one sitting -- two back-to-back sequences alone should immortalize the comedian, one involving a grocery store theft and another involving a security film of Benigni dropping a cigarette butt down his pants. You'll laugh so hard, you won't be able to breathe. Unforgettable.
Serial Killer Satire and Slapstick January 6, 2000 Joel M Sax (Trabuco Canyon, CA USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The squeamish and the vengeful must be forewarned: this film treats a subject mostly untouched by mainstream comics. The format is a combination of slapstick and high satire about the way we judge one another, especially via official channels such as psychiatry and law enforcement.Roberto Benigni plays a prototypical innocent suspected of being a deranged sex killer. Secretly filmed outtakes of his life are rather outrageously reinterpreted by professionals claiming insight into his mind and motives. One is brought to suspect the sanity of those tracking him. Benigni's wife gives a wickedly funny performance as the special police detective assigned to drive him into a sexual frenzy. Many people will not want to see this film because of the subject matter: there is a slight amount of gore and quite a bit of allusions to horrific behavior. The slapstick humor may be hard for some to take given the allusions to wild sexual behavior and grisly homicide. Other, braver souls will find this one of the funniest and most perceptive satires in recent years, to be ranked nearly as high as ~Life is Beautiful~.
Monster Smash! February 2, 2001 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Transcending all need for subtitles, this Roberto Benigni acting/directing vehicle can speak volumes through its sight gags. Benigni pays homage to the time-honored mistaken identity plot line in which a poor yet resourceful con artist, Loris, is inadvertently confused with a notorious killer/rapist who hacks women to bits. Nicholetta Braschi plays Jessica, the female cop sent in to infiltrate "il Mostro's" lair. Amid Chinese lessons, a lit cigarette in the pants, rigging the alarm system at the grocers' for five-finger discounts, and keeping his landlord at bay, Jessica must "catch him in the act." So, in one hilarious sequence, while she is rattling off inane lists of things to do, she goes through sexy costume changes and suggestive body positions. Poor Loris is tortured indeed, and quotes stock prices under his breath to keep his mind off "inflation." But inspite of everything, Jessica thinks he's normal, and there is a bittersweet twist at the end. It is a riotously funny movie, with serious belly laughs. Even with the subtitles, there is so much physicality, the humor translates easily enough.
the funniest movie ever April 20, 2002 John (Toronto) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
You must like slapstick... but beyond that all that is required is that you can double over with laughter! Don't read the critics, this is a comedy not a drama. This movie is funniest with subtitles, not dubbed. Peter Sellers, Charlie Chaplin step aside, here comes your equal. ( Son of Pink Panther is very under rated as well.) Let yourself get into the Italian sence of humour and remember the subtitles are a lttle cruder then the actual Italian is. Enjoy.
