3 out of 5 stars Not for beginners   February 18, 2005

I've never really done Yoga before, but I'm in very good shape and exercise regularly. I was able to get through the entire exercise without any problem. However, it is about 60 minutes and gets a little boring. The menu doesn't offer any chapters to choose from so you have to forward past the things you don't want to do which gets annoying. What I didn't like about Total Body Workout was there was not any instruction on how to do the moves correctly. I really had no idea what Rodney was talking about and he uses words for body parts that I don't even know where or what they are. I also found that doing this DVD with out proper instructions can be very dangerous for your lower back. After doing the workout a couple of times my lower back was very sore. I've had back problems before so I'm weary of doing this workout more until I learn how to do the all the moves properly. Overall, it's a pretty good workout, but I would not recommend it for beginners.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite yoga DVD by far   April 21, 2006

I have been using this DVD regularly for 4 months or so. I do it 1st thing in the morning so the 1st 10 minute warm up session is perfect to wake you up and get you going. Rodney then escalates to a more demanding yet gentle and relaxing series that get you sweating and make your muscles both stretch and work out. When you are tired enough, by minute 30 or so, he then takes you to the floor in a series of back bends that are still quite demanding but allow your heart rate to drop.
Finally there are about 20 minutes of stretching that will leave you feeling calmed, relaxed, energized and full of peace.
After doing this for a month or so your legs and arms are lean and defined, your waist is smaller and you find it easier to sleep at night and cope with every day's problems.
Haven't got this from any other yoga DVD and I own about 6 of them. I recommend this for anybody with some yoga experience.

5 out of 5 stars Good Power Yoga Workout - EXCELLENT Quality   December 28, 2003

I purchased this dvd after reading several reviews. I was looking for a challenging workout, as I've been practicing yoga for about 5 years now. I've been taking ashtanga classes about once a week and going to bikrams classes on and off so I think I have a pretty good experience level. This dvd definitely wasn't one of the most challenging workouts I've done but it was excellent for a dvd. I read the other reviews for this one and I think there is something to be said if you are a beginner. Most yoga dvds are out to try and create a workout for everyone so they do gear towards beginners more by having extra instruction and guidance. I don't think this is the case with this workout, it's really more for intermediate levels. You have to have some sense of proper alignment and where you are at in your practice. I think if I had tried this when I first began I could have gotten hurt because I didn't know how much to push. I really liked the fact that this workout was over an hour, most yoga dvds are about a half an hour, barely enough to really get a workout. I also found that I was incredibly relaxed after this workout. I did this right before going to work and I felt fantastic for the rest of the day. I'd recommend this to anyone except the absolute beginner, it's a must for your collection!

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the money...   January 1, 2004

I have been doing yoga regularly for a little over a year now, and I seem to be drawn to Gaiam's releases. Before buying this DVD, my favorite was Rodney Yee's Power Yoga for strength, stamina, and flexibility. Although I still practice with that program, this is now my new favorite. I think that the folks at Gaiam may have read the reviews of Yee's last power yoga dvd- there are many changes in this new format which make for a wonderful practice. In contrast to the former, which is three twenty minute practices, this dvd is a full hour workout. Because of this, there is no warmup/cooldown repitition, and anyone (myself included) is more likely to complete an hour workout (with this dvd), as opposed to three separate workouts. In addition, I have found that Yee's style in this practice is slightly slower, there is more detailed instruction, and, on the technical side, they do a better job of keeping the audio and video in sync. This is quite a workout which becomes easier with time. I get discouraged with people who say that they give up quickly because it's too hard, as well as with those that say it was too easy. The truth is- if it's difficult for you, the strength and stamina will come in time. Patience, not immediate graitification, is what yoga is about. If you find it very easy- you're either more advanced than this practice or, more likely, not performing the poses correctly. I have often found that the practices that are initially easy for me become more difficult over time as I come closer to getting the proper allignment. Regardless, I highly recommend both of Yee's power yoga releases. I have greatly benefited from making them a part of my daily life.

1 out of 5 stars Aerobics & Yoga? PLEASE!!!   July 25, 2004

Having practicing yoga for years (not only the exercises, but also the philosophy), I didn't care for this DVD at all. IF you want an aerobics DVD, then by all means get it! I felt the tape lacked in safety (especially when it comes to your back, and DEFINITY NOT for anyone who's ever had back problems.) The warnings are occasionally there, but are usually seem to have been throw in as an afterthought, and at times after doing something that could have caused serious problems. It also lacks the basic principals of yoga & seems to have used to "Yoga" name and a few poses (which are not executed correctly) to promote an aerobics programs that I feel lacks in safety & in common sense health principals... IF you are interested in Yoga, or even really in your health, this DVD is NOT for you! I'd strongly recommend either viewing Patricia Patrick's shows on PBS,buying her tapes which are available through Amazon.com "Priscillas Yoga Maintenance Routine" and "Ready,Set,Stretch" , or waiting for her DVDs to come out very soon!!!

I have used this video and was seriously unimpressed... IF you want a cross between yoga and aerobics, try some Tai Chi - you'll get better results and I believe will be a lot safer.. some of the 'bouncing' in this video can do serious harm to people IMHO.
