Outstanding July 30, 2001 William R. Graham (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA USA) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
This movie not only addresses the tragedy and patriotism of those of served our country in WWII, but in brings to light the discrimination that was also a very real part of the existence of our black american heroes. This movie is not what I originally feared it would be, a typical portrayl of the oppresive white man keeping the black man down. It showed the courage and tenacity of a group of Americans (in the case African Americans) who fought and died for their country in the war to end all wars. The storyline follows a group of black pilots who not only bring honor and pride to themselves, but their country. They lived the motto, "My country, right or wrong, my country." It didn't matter that these men were discriminated against because they were black, they did the job that had to be done and they did it well. What more can we ask of any American? Watch this movie for the accurate history it portrays, not only in the struggle for equality in our country, but for all the guts and glory of those fighting men we owe our very freedom to today. God bless America.
Outstanding film about outstanding men! Long overdue! July 22, 2003 Nosferatu (Albuquerque, NM United States) 8 out of 11 found this review helpful
This film is long overdue! The Tuskegee Airmen were one of the bravest groups of men to ever grace the uniformed services. They fought so much than just the "official" enemy. They fought racism on levels that most of us can never comprehend. Imagine the stress they must have been under at all times. Yet, they still took a stand for their country and changed things for all of us, regardless of race. These men have been so under-appreciated by the country, and especially by our home state, Alabama. This movie should be incorporated into every Alabama history class in the state and every American hstory class in the country. It is an outstanding movie about an outstanding group of men. Every American should own it! Note: In spite of what others may feel about the bravery and "kill counts" of the German fliers, the 332nd never lost a bomber that they were assigned to escort and even saved a few that they were not assigned to escort! Talk is cheap when there is documented proof! The Tuskegee Airmen rocked!
The acting is startling. October 29, 1999 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Fishburne and Gooding, Jr. are phenomenal, especially in scenes together. The story needs to be told, yes, but it is this particular presentation which is amazing. The fine cast, the wonderful writing and the shocking cinemotography are what make this a fine movie. The colors of the film, the saturated colors in the air scenes, the darkness in appropraite spots, make it an intense experience.
A History Lesson Long Overdue June 1, 2002 Reginald D. Garrard (Camilla, GA USA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
If one is looking for real American heroes, one need look no further than those proud pilots that formed the flying corps that graduated from historic Tuskegee State University,This excellently told and acted film highlights the tale through the use of exciting action sequences, revealing military settings, and bravura acting from an assemblage of some of finest actors on the contemporary scene. With such award-winning talent as Fishburne, Gooding, Braugher, Lithgow, the production can only be hailed as top-notch. Supporting performances from Malcolm Jamal-Warner (Theo on "The Cosby Show"), Christopher McDonald ("Family Law"), Mekhi Phifer ("O"), Allen Payne ("A Perfect Storm") and Courtney B. Vance ("Law & Order: Criminal Intent") and Viveca A. Fox ("Independence Day") only add to the acting dynamic. 9/11 has made it imperative that we look at those individuals that contributed magnificently to this country's success in time of crisis. The Tuskegee Airmen were an integral part of that story.
The "Tuskeegee Experiment" is a great and informative film. August 17, 2006 Jenny J.J.I. (That Lives in Northern Nevada) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I tend to get very emotional about this film. I can never see the ending without tears of appreciation, joy and intense pride. HBO is by far the best at making original movies and shows. The film has technical flaws... every film does... but beyond them it tells a story that, by design or negligence, has been ignored by American history for almost a half century. Laurence Fishburne and Andre Braugher deliver stellar performances as Hannibal Lee and the great military leader Benjamin O. Davis. The other great actors who have some sort of direct or distant connection to the cause, to contribute were Cuba Gooding Jr., Courtney B. Vance, Allen Payne, Malcolm Jamal Warner, and Andre Braugher. This film was wrapped up for me when a red necked White bomber pilot says in the final briefing: "I have a crew whose lives are my responsibility. If it's all the same to you Sir, I want the 332nd to take me to Berlin and back". That cinematic statement is a long overdue. `Tuskegge Airmen' is a movie that should be viewed by all Americans interested in seeing a slice of Americana that's been neglected. Most will identify with the raw emotion evoked by the plight of these brave and talented men. Black Americans will be moved to tears as we are reminded of what those trailblazers overcame so that future Black soldiers, airmen and every day citizens could take their rightful place in American society, proud of their past and heritage. We all owe a debt of gratitude to the Tuskegee Airmen. This movie makes it clear why. I hope HBO continues it's long trend of fantastic films and series.
