Hilarious Bunuelfest October 17, 2000 Miko (Jersey City, NJ United States) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
One of the greatest satirist in the world of cinema, Luis Bunuel, has come up with a great masterpiece that combines a profound social statement with surreal artistry and devastating humor. Whenever a group of friends attempt to dine together, they get sidetracked by the most bizarre reasons. A dumbfounding comedy with excellent ensemble acting only Bunuel could create. The surreal images (at one point one would ask, which one is surreal and not?) are an absolute marvel. I'm so happy to hear that this film is coming up in a digitally remasterred VHS and DVD. The latest VHS copy produced several years ago did not do justice to this sparkling gem of film. The DVD produced by Criterion with 2 discs should have tons of extras. Can't wait to have it!
empty and not funny July 4, 2002 rs (NY) 4 out of 40 found this review helpful
This "comedy" is boring, stale, and not funny. Its emphasis on "surrealism" and absurdity is a sign that the director had to concoct his film in a way to persuade everyone that he actually had someting to say. While watching how the rich folks could never get down to a serious dinner, I got hungry (and angry) myself. Don't waste your time.
The endless desire! September 7, 2004 Hiram Gomez Pardo (Valencia, Venezuela) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
The difference between a caprice and a passion which endures the whole life is the caprice endures longer . This statement belongs to Oscar Wilde and it fits for this film as a ring to finger. Since two couples decide to go dinner , that simple issue will turn in a bitter nightmare with innovative ideas and distorted state of things .. Reality and illusion blended and linked by superb surrealistic situations all along this journey . Consider as an endless puzzle joke . The conceptual basis of this original film nevertheless you can feel in his previous film The exterminator angel . Another masterful jewel of this unique director Luis Bunuel.
Amazing Reviews! October 24, 2005 Dreaming of Sleep 4 out of 39 found this review helpful
I am amazed by all the 5 star reviews, how surreal! No really. I agree with the 1 star posts. The surreal life on MTV is a bit more, ah surreal. This movie is far from poignant, well...on second thought.
The Stuff of Dreams July 1, 2008 F. S. L'hoir (Irvine, CA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
"The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie" unfolds with the absurd logic of a recurrent dream, and since the DVD has been beautifully restored, one is able to dream the dream in vivid color: Elegantly dressed guests arrive for a dinner party only to have the hostess inform them that they have arrived on the wrong night; thus, they keep making appointments for dinners that are continually interrupted for one reason or another--all of the reasons being as patently ridiculous as are the characters: a bishop, who arrives at the house and asks to be hired as a gardener, and then relates the story of his macabre childhood; a soldier, who arrives at a restaurant (that has run out of tea and coffee), asks to join the ladies, whom he has never met before, and relates the story of his macabre childhood; a General, who arrives with his platoon a day early at the same house with the same hostess in time for dinner, and then, after the General invites a Private to relate the story of his macabre dream to the hosts and the invited guests (who listen attentively), both General and platoon depart for maneuvers (but not before inviting all the guests to his house for dinner, where even more macabre events unfold.). Thus, the dreams contain dreams within dreams within dreams within dreams within dreams et cetera ad absurdum. This film is for anyone who has ever had recurrent nightmares of waiting for a bus on the wrong corner; of being about to take a test only to discover that one has studied the wrong subject; of being about give a lecture only to discover that one has forgotten the notes; or of performing on stage with a mouth stuffed with peanut-butter when one's cue is coming up. All the absurd commonplaces that make perfect sense when one is dreaming. And much of the "discreet charm" of the bourgeois characters in this film derives from the fact that one is dreaming their nightmares and not one's own.
