5 out of 5 stars Damsel in Distress   February 7, 2001

If you've ever watched a Fred Astaire movie that included Ginger Rogers, and thought that the movie would be much better without Rogers, this is the movie to watch. The script and story line are much better than his early films and Joan Fontaine can actually act as opposed to Rogers usual stale performance. The music is excellent and entertaining. George Burns and Gracie Allen make the film that much more enjoyable. One of Fred Astaires best.

Just to add my 2 to all the deserved raves that have preceded this, there are two outstanding dance numbers in this movie that will linger in the memories of everyone lucky enough to see Damsel In Distress. They all include Fred & Gracie & George. One involves whiskbrooms and I believe was actually a routine from George & Gracie's stage act that they taught Fred; the other takes place in an amusement park. Both numbers are the results of the very best music, the most professional performers (is there anything George & Gracie & Fred couldn't do?) and brilliant direction - hey, let's not forget George Stevens (well, we can't forget Giant & Place in the Sun & Gunga Din, but does anyone remember that he also directed this movie and Swing Time - two of the best Astaire movies?).

Please somebody: a DVD of Damsel In Distress?

a great happy and ideal film. Fred Astaire and Joan Fontaine are great in it. think it deserves all the stars it can get. The dance number at the amusement fun house is one of the best and funnest and George and Gracie are adorrable in it. It's one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Gerschwin, Wodehouse, Astaire, Burns and Allen together   April 24, 2000

Why this movie does not make the top 10 list of musicals is a mystery to all who have seen it. With a book by Wodehouse, hummable songs by the Gerschwins, and Burns and Allen helping Astaire this is one of the best films of the genre. The beautiful Joan Fontaine is misplaced, but the rest is magic. The soundtrack alone is worth the price of admission.

Anyone discussing movie musicals must add this to even a modest home collection.

5 out of 5 stars Where did all those songs come from...   June 18, 1999

A Foggy Day, Nice Work if you can get it, I can't be bothered now, Stiff Upper Lip, came from this gem of a movie. Burns and Allen are at their best and Gracie is her scatterbrained self. My favorite seqence is the Fun House Ballet beginning with Gracie singing "Stiff Upper Lip", and Fred Astaire walking across the English Country side singing "A Foggy Day", The Trio work on "Nice Work" is great as is Freds dance routine. The plot is based on a series of bets between the housestaff, and the results are hilarious. For Gershwin mavens this is a piece of heaven to hear the original orchestrations and productions.
