The best acting you'll ever see. October 5, 2002 Rick D. Barszcz (bristol, ct United States) 10 out of 13 found this review helpful
Everything was done right in this classic motion picture. The wonderful script, superb actors, brilliant music score and a wonderful story and a director who really knew how to get the most out of his cast. This motion picture is the likes of what will never come out of Hollywood again. Kim Novak was not only beautiful but could melt any man with here beautiful eyes. The most famous scene where she is dancing at the Labor Day picnic and the seductive theme music playing in the background still is the most sexual scene ever film while still wearing clothes. This kind of acting will never be seen again nor is there talent today in Hollywood to recreate this. The surround channels are bright, brilliant but suttle enough to give you that engulfing sound that just makes you curl-up in your chair a little tighter. This is one of the only movies that makes you feel the pasion as if you were right in the movie yourself. This movie has been brilliantly restored and unlike the review, i give the picture and sound a 5. A must for any collector and a national treasure.
DVD video quality disappointing October 17, 2005 Larry Dell of Sacramento, CA (Sacramento, CA) 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
The movie itself is classic entertainment, and my wife and I have enjoyed our VHS tape of it (in "letterbox" format) many times. However, our recent purchase of the DVD was a disappointment due to (1) the "pan and scan" format and (2) the poor color quality characterized by a brownish tinge throughout much of the movie, making it look "old". Until a restored version is available on DVD, I recommend avoiding the DVD and settling for the VHS tape. The sharpness of the DVD may be a little better than the tape, but the letterbox and color tones of the tape far outweigh the surprisingly marginal quality of the DVD. Such a great motion picture deserves a better DVD.
5 stars for the film, 1 for this DVD release January 8, 2007 DSR (Florida) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I've waited for years to get this wonderful classic on DVD and was so disappointed to discover it's only available in a full-screen format. For those who don't know the difference, this classic was originally filmed in a widescreen format, so to make it fit the traditional square television, they had to crop out a lot of the picture. What's more, this "restored" version contains no documentaries--only trailers and cast lists. I e-mailed Sony about a possible widescreen release and was told there are no plans for another release at this time. What a shame! The film was released on VHS in a widescreen format and deserved to be handled with the same respect in the DVD release. If you want to get the full impact of the theatrical release, don't buy this chopped-up version. Save your money and watch the VHS or widescreen airings on Turner Classic Movies. Eventually someone will do right by this film and release a better DVD.
INCREDIBLE MOVIE !! April 10, 2006 Donna Z (LINDENHURST, NY United States) 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
One of the most incredible movies of all time. I remember watching this movie growing up, and the story has not diminished at all through time as I have gotten older. William Holden and Kim Novack light up the screen with such sexual tension... and the BEST sensual scene ever on film is the Moonglow dance.....Nothing will ever top that!! How beautifully the scene was done, with no unnecessary skin or sexual scenes you see in today's films to take away from the simplicity of the scene. You can just about swoon from it all. I highly recommend Picnic to all the romantics out there!!

The on-screen chemistry between William Holden and Kim Novak is the best I have ever seen. The acting is superb by these two as well as by Cliff Robertson, Rosalind Russell, Susan Strasberg, etc. Even Nick Adams as the obnoxious paperboy is some of his best work, although on-screen time is very limited. If you are in love now, or have ever been passionately in love, then this movie is a must see. I have waited a long time for it to become available again as I wore the other tape out. This has become my all time movie favorite.
