0 STARS: Mindless GARBAGE!! October 17, 2007 HorrorMan (The Marsten House) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Admittedly, I was expecting something else when I started watching "Bloody Birthday", but this is a real stinker of a movie folks! One can't help but see the parallels with this movie and other children killer flicks like "Village of the Damned" and "Children of the Damned", both of which I did not care for, but the evil children concept is what these movies are all about...sorry, this kind of film just doesn't do it for me. Basically, "Bloody Birthday" is about three children who are all born on the same day when there is an eclipse. Somehow, this makes them evil and they like to kill people in a rather unconvincing albeit sometimes brutal fashion. Beyond that, it's just a low-grade slasher flick really without much in the way of death scenes or plot development. I see many reviewers talking about 80s cheese and slashers in general, but there is a lot more interesting movies from this time period than this garbage called "Bloody Birthday". I guess I would rather watch a slasher movie about a killer with some prowess as a villain instead of some 3rd graders beating people with a baseball bat. For my money, this movie is garbage, and I'd say skip it unless you like seeing evil children inexplicably killing a bunch of people in a rather unconvincing and unrealistic fashion. To me, the only really good movie about an evil child is the original classic, "The Omen"...now, that's scary, and it's a great story too!! "Bloody Birthday", eh, not so much.
interesting little horror flick July 21, 2003 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the tragic tale of three children, all born during a solar eclipse. Unfortunatly, saturn is blocked during the eclipse. Saturn, as we all know is responsible for one's moral conscience. What does this mean for our three solar babies? Well, with a title like Bloody Birthday, its not to hard to figure out. Before their 10th birthday, the kids decide to start killing some folks. The town goes in a frenzy as they try to figure out who is killing their citizens. Overall, this picture looks good considering its age. The DVD doesn't look much different than the vhs. The acting is pretty decent for this type of film with the ringleader of the boys, 'Kurtis' standing out. Mind you, i kind of got tired of kurtis trying over and over to kill the neighbours. Do the job already or move on to someone else! Your bumbling and fumbling lessenned the fear factor considerably! oh well. A solid, if not spectacular disk.
Ubercamp at its finest! November 3, 2003 Brandon L. Harlow (Colonial Heights, VA United States) 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
I so love this film! I found it on VHS a few years back for $2.99, little did I realize the joy & humor it would bring into my life til this very day! The murder scenes are so over the top & stupendous, that you LOVE them! People getting hung by jump ropes, toy guns that are real, birthday cake poisoning...and all done by 10 year olds! The absolute best scene is the gratutious nudity featuring Julie Brown (the white one). Her lil sister charges a quarter for the other 2 evil boys to watch through a hole in her wall. Blond boys asks, "What is she catches us?" Lil girl: "No way, her brains are in her bra!" What fantastic dialogue! This whole series of events is just too much from the kids innocently eating to cookies with jewelry box music playing til it segues into an incredible schlocky late 70s metal tune that is outrageous! I sooooo love this song & desperately want to get it on CD! Some guy shouting into a mic "you're a woman don't you know" and "there's no need to wonder if your dreams will still be there" with women singing "doo doo dah doo" in the background." Of course Julie gets naked and the lil boys eat it up as seen by how big there pupils grow through the hole in the wall. Nah-na-nah Nah-na-nah! Julie is so funny she even dances naked with a feather boa around her neck! Did I mention she also has posters of Erik Estrada and Van Halen on her wall??? Another great scene is the big birthday party where one boy poisons the cake. Fortunately for the guests and unfortunately for us the teen girl saves everyone but not before shouting "it is poisoned!" really loud and we get a shot of this annoying boy grabs his throat, clutchign & moaning and acting like he is dying! Ha! He so deserved an Oscar!
Kid killers, relentless and p-oed January 3, 2006 J. Cook (Buffalo) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
[good things] I really liked the little kids in this movie, they were relentless, evil and just down right hateful. The movie was very suspenseful, even though we knew who all of the killers were from the start. The acing was good, and even though the kills weren't bloody or entirely unique, they were great. The directing and photography were also good for this genre. There is also a scene where the killer is wearing a sack over his head, it gave me alot of great visions of Friday The 13th: Part 2, The Town That Dreaded Sundown, etc. All in all, I like that this movie featured young kids as the killers, something that is not done very often. [the bad] With movies like this you have to take the good with the bad, and the lack of blood took alot away from this movie. Since it featured kids as the killer, the movie was lacking alot, such as worthwhile dialogue. Other than that I reall don't have much complaints. [final thoughts] What a nice find this movie was. I had never heard about it until recently, I bought it and it became an instant favorite of mine. Billy (Jane) Jacoby plays the lead adolescent killer, and does a great job. Definitely the highlight character of the movie. The girl who played his companion (who's name escapes me at this second) was definitely a great supporting role. Between the two they made this movie work. At any rate, this is an old and forgotten gem of the genre, if you liked The Good Son, I can almost guarantee you'll like this.
Yes, it is WIDESCREEN ANAMORPHIC ENHANCED June 27, 2007 A. Salas (Brooklyn, New York United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
OK, great film. Spooky, funny, sexy. The image quality not mind-blowing on this release, but hey, I'll take what I can get. It's been too long a wait for this. VCI needs to do more releases like this. Someone said this is full-screen, and not anamorphic... but it actually is. Watched it on my friend's widescreen 16x9 TV, and it looked fine. If you love this film, buy this DVD.
