1 out of 5 stars Forget it joystick doesn't work   April 19, 2006

My joystick doesn't work properly and after reading the Ubi forum it looks like 80% of the people out there are having the same problems. I hope I can get a refund for this trash. Their patches don't work either. WASTE OF $$

4 out of 5 stars Not as bas as other reviews make it out to be...   June 16, 2006

While installing the game, basking in the promise only new games can bring, I decided to pass the time by checking out the reviews here on Amazon. Everyone rips this game apart. Having just bought a new joystick for this game, I was especially concerned by everyone's disappointment with how the game played with one.

After installing the game, it gave me an error message on startup. Reseraching it on Ubisoft's Knowledgebase revealed that the game requires that you install the same DirectX 9.0c that's included. That's wierd, but after a reinstall, I was good to go.

On my first flight, my plane lifted off and immediately spun into the groud uncontrollably. After fiddling around with the controls, I found out my throttle was being used as my roll. Fixing the problem with some common sense joystick configurations fixed everything and the game is both great to play and good for joystick use. The problem would of been avoided if Logitech woud of had the pre-defined button configurations ready, but they haven't come out yet since the game is so new.

Overall, this really is a fun game that looks and plays great. Nothing extraordinary must be done to overcome any initial problems.

I should have read this reviews before buying this junk.....
I bought the one for the Xbox 360 and it works great...
This one I bought to make comparisons of the 360 vs my PC..
The 360 it is better...no match for 3- 3.2GHz processors (360)
against 1-2.66Ghz poor pentim 4(my PC).....
Other than the performance...YOU CANNOT CONTROL THE PLANES
WITH A JOYSTICK OR KEYBOARD....I want my money back!!!!!
I Thought of selling it used here but I AM NOT A THIEF!....

1 out of 5 stars Kinda Cool Game, No Joystick Support = Return   August 4, 2006

First let me say that my PC has decent specs (P4 3.2Ghz, 1Gb ram, Radeon X800) and I know my way around it as I built it. I installed this game, had an issue with DirectX as I chose NOT to install the bundled version with the CD because I already have it installed on my PC. The game didn't want to run since I didn't install the DirectX that came with it, so after re-installing the bundled DirectX, everything worked fine...except the joystick.

I decided to play the game thru the first couple missions on keyboard...ouch. Maybe I'm just not used to using keyboard only (even tho I play BF2 often with keyboard/mouse), but it just hurt after an hour or so.

On to the game play. It's ok, and the graphics are pretty nice. I can crank everything up to high on my machine, and I did. Learning how to site your target in while doing a maneuver was pretty helpful, tho unrealistic. The other thing that was completely unrealistic and total arcade was how you hit the left or right arrow and it goes into a hard, perfect bank. This just seemed kinda lame, but understandable for the arcade factor. Actually, I think this is why a real joystick won't work with this game...there are two types of left/right turns you can do on the keyboard: using the A & D keys, you can have aileron control, then using the down arrow will give you up elevator, which will do the same thing as holding the left or right arrow. I don't think the game knows how or which inputs to give to the real joysticks, which in turn leads to the problem with joysticks. I bet game-pad style joysticks work fine.

I went over to the Ubi soft forums and heard nothing but bad news about this game. I should also mention that I downloaded and patched the game and it still didn't work with my Saitek Cyborg Evo. This is a show-stopper.

I bought this game yesterday from CompUSA and will be returning it today for in-store credit. It's a shame that Ubi put out this game in this VERY unfinished form. It's obviously a port over from the Xbox version, and a VERY poorly done port over at that.

Because there is no support for my Saitek AV8R joystick through the game. I had a tough time with the controls at first and was disappointed, but after a few hours of tweeking I got everything mapped perfectly. Now game play definitly more enjoyable!

All you guys complaining about no joystick support is untrue. You need to learn how to use the mapping software that comes from your joystick manufacturer or go back to playing on your xbox or playstation. PC's are not for you.

The planes are stunning. The scenery is very realistic. The game is hard but not too hard. Excellent balance between arcade and sim. Its just enough arcade to keep it simple and just enough sim to keep realistic.
