Eh...It's Okay. September 1, 2002 Brian (USA) 9 out of 12 found this review helpful
Personally I would definitely purchase and read EGM over Gamepro any day, but since this is review is about Gamepro, I'll just keep this critique to Gamepro amd Gamepro only from here on. On the upside, Gamepro is a good videogame magazine if you want to get the gist of what a specific video game is about or what is happening in the video game industry;its reviews give you a general idea of how good each game is. In essense, Gamepro is a concise and quick read. On the downside, Gamepro's brevity is also where it falls short of being an excellent video game magazines. Being concise is good but not when it becomes brevity and the articles lack the details when necessary. Unfortunately, when the articles do lack the details, it's in the reviews and previews (a good portion of the magazine) and that's what helps me decide what video games I would want to purchase with my hard earned money or even use my time to play a certain video game at all. I don't think I'd want to risk $$ on a game if all the review basically says is something like "It's a good game. Nice graphics. Excellent gameplay."....something that sounds too generic. As a side note, Gamepro very much lacks any interesting and creative articles-something I would expect out of a top notch magazine. Gamepro magazine is a decent buy for around $yr. (subscription), but it's not the best buy among the video game magazines out there.
The worst gaming magazine November 29, 2004 Dark Helmet (Seattle, WA) 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
As you can tell by the title, I'm not enamored of this magazine. I've been playing video games since the early 80s, and have read many, many gaming magazines. My reasons for this negative review of Gamepro follow in no particular order: 1.) Their numerical rating system stinks. 1-5 points is just not accurate enough. Most mags/web sites have a 1-10 system with decimals. Not Gamepro. 2.) The written part of the reviews are way too short, and often are written borderline incoherantly. It's as if they hired the proverbial 1,000 monkeys to type them out. 3.) Often times they cram two or three reviews on one page. Screen shots provided with reviews are often the size of a postage stamp. 4.) The number of ads in relation to content is distinctly high. Once when I was bored, I counted all the ads in one issue. Out of around 110 pages there were 60+ pages of ads. 5.) Their article layouts are confusing, and occasionally they print on colored backgrounds that closely match the text color. Forget about reading it if you're colorblind. 6.) Their gaming tips are either so obvious that a brain dead chimpanzee could figure them out, or plain don't work. I suspect that the ones that do are ripped off from various web sites. 7.) Gamepro costs the same as better gaming mags, such as EGM and Game Informer. So, in closing... if you want a good gaming magazine, just about any magazine other than Gamepro would be an improvement. Many great gaming magazines have come and gone, why a turd like Gamepro continues is a mystery to me.
Lame, unless you are 12 or younger. November 5, 2001 Adam Adamou (Toronto, ON, CANADA) 7 out of 13 found this review helpful
This is a magazine geared toward pre-teens. The editors are "masked" as little characters, the layout is confusing (to an adult) and the editorial comments are often abusive and trite. Worst of the bunch. Avoid.
Gamepro Magazine 4/5 April 11, 2002 Twiz (usa) 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
Gamepro magazine covers all consoles -- Xbox,Gamecube,PC,Playstation 2,and so on and so on.They review, preview and write prostartegy for games.I think theyre reviews could of have been a bit better, and sometimes it seems a bit boring to read. But the pro strategy guides they write are great, and it has a fair amount of cheat codes.Gamepro magazine is great,it has a few problems though.
If I could give negative stars.... March 25, 2004 Nick 7 out of 14 found this review helpful
This magazine is just plain horrible. I have been receiving it for about 4 years now, and each year, Gamepro gets signifigantly worse. I subscribe to all major gaming mags (OPM, EGM, CGW) and this is the worst by far.Visuals and Durability- It's horrible. The new "redesign" is an eyesore and it makes the mag almost impossible to look at. To make it worse, Gamepro is printed on really cheap paper that is flimsy and rips easy. It feels like fax paper! Every month, Gamepro comes to me with at least 5 rips in the pages or cover. The screenshots of games look to be of the lowest resolution possible. And, the mag is over 50% ads!! Not even good ones- crappy ones for crappy games that no one has even heard of. Previews- Gives little information, and very poorly written. They fail to make the stories even remotely interesting or engaging. The other mags (OPM and EGM) have about twice as much info on games. The only preview I have found of any use in the past 2 years of Gamepro was about The Bard's Tale. Isn't 18 bucks a year expensive for 1 helpful preview? Reviews- Utterly useless. These are a joke. I have been burned numerous times by buying crappy games that Gamepro rates good. It seems that every damn game gets a 4 out of 5, whether that game is ATV Offroad Fury (good) or Mickey's Crapstravaganza (hmm let's think about that one). I think I could send them an empty box that says "Gamepro Sucks" all over it, and they would rate it a 4 out of 5. The lame names of the reviewers don't help much either. Dan Elektro? Four Eyed Dragon? D-Pad Destroyer? What kind of sad crap is that?!?!? Covers- Surprisingly, the cover art is generally good, probably to sucker people into buying a magazine that shouldn't even be used as a firestarter. Once you get past that pretty cover everything goes downhill. Fast. Why anyone would like this magazine is beyond me. I have repeatedly tried to cancel my subscription, only to be greeted the next month with an unwelcome present. I would rather the mailman put dog crap through my mail slot than this "magazine". There is one redeeming quality: If you really hate someone who plays a lot of games, you can give this to them as a present. Then you can watch them cry after they waste their money on some crap that Gamepro said was good. Otherwise, if you're looking at subscribing to a multiplatform gaming mag, get EGM. It's got good reviews, funny articles and sure as hell beats the crap out of this trash.
