4 out of 5 stars A really great game   March 18, 2007

If you really want to experience speed then you have to play Sonic Rush. When you are playing as Sonic and he reaches top speed and then you hit the Rush manuever, it feels like he's going to break through the right side of your DS. The game is really really good although the bosses can be annoyingly cheap and Blaze's levels are exactly the same as Sonic's except she's not nearly as fast.
This is the only game that I really enjoyed going after the Chaos Emeralds and although you might want to break your DS in half when you realize you were 3 rings short of getting the emerald and you have to do the stage all over again, it's really rewarding when you finally snag enough rings and can claim the emerald as your own.
I highly recommend this game to anybody.

This is a lovely game. The music totally rocks! I go to the options sound test menu all the time just to hear "Vela Nova" and "Wrapped in Black". The backgrounds and levels themselves are presented beautifully with bright colors and such. The easier stylus special stages provide great entertainment for me, although the last one (like many other of the final special stages in these games) nearly had me pulling my hair out. There was only one thing I didn't quite understand in this game. Blaze apparently has pyrokinesis powers, or control of fire, so every time she jumps flames surround her. So how, whenever she was underwater, would flames still manage to surround her when she jumped? Last time I checked water put out fire, so I take this to be a tiny design flaw. This was the only flaw I found, however, as everything else seems to be designed perfectly. The bosses are pretty fun, but basic once you get in some practice. However, the extra boss proved to be pretty challenging with Sonic's lack of power, and Blaze's lack of speed. The one major disadvantage I see in this game, compared to the Sonic Advance series, is the lack of playable characters. I mean characters we love, like Amy and Knuckles, play a role in the storyline, and Tails and Cream are even your map partners (they tell you which zone you are about to enter), but only Sonic and Blaze are playable, which can be a letdown if you were expecting Tails' propeller flight or for Knuckles' gliding and climbing abilities. Another disadvantage would be the game's mixed signals. It encourages you to go as fast as you can, yet if you go to fast (like I usually end up doing) you will bump into an enemy robot, or fall down a bottomless pit, which can cause you to squander so many lives before you make it out of the difficult levels. Yes, the levels ARE challenging. You won't make it through the game without some good effort, but trust me you will want to see the endings. My personal favorite ending (even against the extra ending) is the one of Sonic's storyline and the credits thereafter. Trust me on this, it's a hoot! Overall, this game is fun to beat with it's expansive gameplay (I mean for once they even combined 2D with 3D action) and it's upbeat and good enough to dance to music. I recommend this game for anyone who wants fun! Especially Sonic fans.

5 out of 5 stars "Value" game, excellent deal for the money   August 20, 2007

Getting a new Sonic game for Nintendo DS under $20 is fantastic. The game is very typical Sonic, with all the side-scrolling action. When fly-by-night publishers are releasing horrible games for $40 and $50 dollars, its amazing to see such high-quality studios like SEGA deliver a product like this at the $20 price point. Well done, SEGA.

3 out of 5 stars A new direction for Sonic 2D, some will like it, some won't...   December 19, 2007

I am a fan of 2D Sonic, and also like the 3D offerings. I had high hopes for this game, and I was surprised to find that I just didn't enjoy it. After finishing a few acts I just don't have any desire to go back to it.

Sonic Rush features more cheap deaths than any other 2D Sonic game I've every played. Usually I would die without any idea what happened. I'd just sail into a bottomless pit, or be trapped underwater with no air pockets and no idea how to get out. Most of the stages looked pretty much the same start to finish, so I didn't have any clues about where exactly I needed to slow down or jump. Keep in mind that you really CAN'T go slow to learn the level even if you want to; if you aren't running fast you will just get stuck on a swing or be unable to complete a leap. Tails can't help you either--he's developed the voice of pre-teen girl and only acts as Sonic's cheerleader. The new character, Blaze, has slightly different moves but doesn't give you any new ways of finishing an act.

The only way to really play this game is to memorize the level and blaze through. If you prefer Sonic Advance's mazelike levels with lots of possible routes, you are likely to be disappointed.

Pros:
1. Very fast speed.
2. New moves, and the ability to charge moves by doing acrobatics during leaps.
3. 3D elements.

Cons:
1. Very fast speed...too fast for the small LCD screen on the DS, in my opinion. You can't really see where you are going. At full speed, you likely won't even see an oncoming badnik, spikes, or a pit in time to react. You'll need to be good at level memorization.
2. Cheap deaths. Miss a jump...you die. Bottomless pits everywhere.
3. Uninteresting, linear levels with few visual cues to tell you where you are.
4. Hip hop club style music...some people like it, I found it incredibly annoying.
5. Tails is not playable!
