The Legend of the Crystal DULL... November 19, 2007 Carter's Mom (Washington, DC) 12 out of 18 found this review helpful
I realize that I am in the minority here, but I really didn't enjoy this ND game. On the positive side, the plot moves along, the graphics are great and it is more challenging than most of the last releases. However, many of the puzzles are just not that logical and can be VERY tedious. This is the first Nancy Drew game that I have had to consistently resort to cheat sites to get through (even on Junior Detective). Normally, I can complete the whole mystery with only one to two hints. It seems like HER is trying to respond to customer comments and create longer, more challenging games. Some of the puzzles in this particular game do that very well. Other parts, however, really miss the mark. If you are a fan of other ND games, you'll probably enjoy this one, too. If you haven't played any other games in the Nancy Drew series, this is NOT a good choice to start with.
I Think That Her Interactive Finally Got The Message! November 13, 2007 Hope to be helpful... 8 out of 12 found this review helpful
I have been an avid Nancy Drew gamer for years now. I have purchased and solved all 16 prior ND games, but I was so disappointed with the last two game in the series that I almost didn't buy this one. I'm glad that I did though. I was beginning to wonder why Her Interactive wasn't listening to all the reviews that were being posted on the website that said they wanted Nancy Drew to return to what the first games were like. I could not agree more! The first games in the series were so wonderful, that the last two or three have been huge letdowns. Finally, this game IS a return to the original. No, the theme song is not back, and you don't have the wonderful book menu, and it doesn't incorporate edutainment into the mix, but the storyline and the puzzles were quite a step up from previous games. Here is my list of pros. Graphics-Wonderful! Better than any of the previous games by a long stretch! I have never been to New Orleans, but after playing this game I felt like I had! This game creates a suspenseful setting with dark, dreary rooms and constant rain. GREAT! Story-Great again! I love it when they decide to make a game about an actual legend. It makes the game feel all the more realistic to the player. The only thing I would have liked is if there was more interaction between Nancy and the other characters in the game. I think that that would have helped to develop the story line a little more. Puzzles-A+ They were more challenging than some of the other games in the series. I had to spend more time on some of these puzzles than I spent total on the two previous games, and some of them were really addictive and fun! They were all very logical and I never needed a walk-through. There were a few puzzles that were repetitive though. Cons Ending-Dreadful! It was not at all challenging or difficult! I wasn't even surprised by the culprit! Most of the Nancy Drew games have an ending that gets you adrenaline pumping, but this one you just kind of sit and watch it end. Not very fun. Content-Clean game, but contained a little bit of hoodoo. I am a Christian, so this made me a little bit uneasy. It is presented as a bunch of hogwash, but if young children are going to be playing it, you may want to pass on it! A word to the wise: Some very creepy, make you jump a mile high, moments in this game. I loved it, but I think some very, very young children would end up having nightmares! Also, at the beginning of the game, there is a warning that says that the game is best played with the lights turned off. It may be good for the ambiance, but if you are like me, I don't recommend that you try this! If you get migraines, you may be in for a killer one! All in all, this is one of the best games Her has produced in a while! If you are like me, and are a loyal ND fan who has been hesitant to buy this game because of its predecessors you won't be disappointed with Legend of the Crystal Skull!
Raining at the Mansion November 14, 2007 Ruined Tower 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
This adventure has everything I look for in this type of game; a haunted house, a rainstorm (that you walk in and never get wet!), New Orleans and hints of voodoo. The characters are interesting, not annoying, and there are less phone calls than in other Nancy Drew games. The problem is that many of the puzzles are not solvable. They involve tedious trial and error for a solution that cannot be deduced by logical reasoning, or simply make no sense at all. I found myself on the cheat boards often, and felt disheartened when I realized there was no way to have "figured it out" myself. Play this one for the gothic ambiance, but don't waste time if you can't 'get' the puzzle.
Predictable Ending December 27, 2007 balletmom (Wisconsin) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Like many reviewers have stated, the creators of the Nancy Drew games seem to have been listening to us, and the more recent games have become more challenging. I do have a few complaints with this game that my girls have stated: There were many activities, but many were very tedious and did need the cheats on the message board. The ending was predictable. None of us had any doubt "who done it" from the very beginning. The ending was far too easy and like my daughter stated, just didn't make any sense why they did the activity they did to escape the situation they were in. I'm not sure I liked the idea of toying with the world of voodoo, even if they called it hoodoo. My girls did like the idea of playing as Bess. They really enjoyed Bess' character. Other than that, it was a fun game. Yes, I played it-I always do! It was not my favorite though. I still really like "Treasure in the Royal Tower" and "Curse of Blackmoor Manor".
